My 11 month old howls everytime he wakes up, any ideas why?

Hi,

I am really hoping that someone out there know why my 11 month old wakes up from every sleep (in the morning and his naps) crying like he is in pain.

He has been sleeping through since he was 4 months after sleep training and used to babble gently when we woke but that has changed over the last 2 months or so. He isn't sleeping a lot less than normal (12 hours over night and between 2 and 3 hours during the day) so isn't over tired and wanting to go down for longer, and he calmes down after about 30 seconds of howling and goes back to babbling happily but I just don't understand why he howls to start with.

He is happy the rest of the time and has just had 2 teeth come through that were bothering him so I don't think it is teething.

Does anyone know why? Please say you do!

Thanks

Could it be separation anxiety? At this age they are becoming more aware of what's what - and waking up alone and wondering where your parents are must be scary.

My DS started doing this around the same age, plus wouldn't go to sleep on his own. I think it's just one of those things (as long as they are not ill).

Ahh, that would make sence Nice. Does you DS still do it? I really hope he is happier waking up soon, at the moment I worry that he hates bed because he has a couple of minutes of grumbles when I put him down too.

Yes, seconded. I co-sleep with my daughter, but if she wakes up when I'm not next to her she cries (she's 15 months but started doing it ages ago).

Count yourself lucky Wink my DD is going through a phase where she screams for up to an hour after some naps! Only way I can snap her out of it when it's that bad is take her out in the pushchair or the car. I even had to collect her from nursery after lunch because she was so inconsolable yesterday (she does have a cold which wasn't helping)... Sigh!

Needmen - DS is 18 months and doesn't always cry when he wakes up now - certainly nothing like that stage. At night he will just go back to sleep on his own mostly. I do still sit with him while he goes to sleep though. It seems like the easiest option, plus I take my phone and mess around online so it's quite restful!

DS is 2.3 and still does this. I really hope he grows out of it!
