Anyone else's baby creak like a rusty gate?

DS (9mo) has a a strange habit of croaking/moaning as he's falling asleep. He's done it for months, but it's reached new heady heights recently. Unless he falls asleep on the boob (so only if he's in the buggy/sling/wrap) he opens his mouth really wide and lets forth a very resonant creak/croak. For Ages. And Ages. And Ages. Once for a 4 mile walk...

You can make the sound by doing an impression of the old oak door of a haunted mansion. At the peak of the creak, hold it, open your mouth really really wide and just keep it going. For Ages. And Ages. And Ages.

I don't know if he finds it soothing (can't imagine so) or whether he's fighting sleep with it, but it's driving me up the flipping wall. He'll stop, and lull me into a false sense of security then ramp it up to an all new eardrum-busting pitch and volume.

His sleep has gone to pot (again) lately because he's learning to crawl and has cut 2 teeth and is doing his own head in rolling over every time he wants to sleep, and the creaking seems to have increased with it.

Anyone experienced similar? Anyone? Anyone?

Is it like a snore?
Does he struggle?

Mombojombo · 11/06/2012 20:32

Nope - not a snore or a wheeze or a rattle (he has those at different times!) but a very deliberate, vocal creaking. So strange. Funny sometimes - less amusing at 3am...

Yes! My DS does this. I call it his going to sleep noises. I had no idea babies would be this noisy at night. He is always squeaking away in his cot. Find it quite cute.

Not quite the same but DD2 does a kind of growling noise before going to sleep during the night. Not sure if I should be worried or not :)

Mine does this - exactly like a creaking gate before sleep (usually when a bit too tired, so would make sense if it's increased as he's sleeping a bit less well), maddening.

Mine did this when younger - ds was moved into his own room at 2 months as it was keeping me awake. He mostly grew out of it by a year. Dd grew out of it by ten weeks which is just as well as she has to be in my room until hers is done.

My DD nearly 9 months does a quiet version of this if I have to cuddle her off. While she thrust her hips back and forth like she's riding a horse. Never figured that one out either! Xxx
