How (and when) can I stop co-sleeping and get baby to sleep on her own?

Tips and encouragement needed please!

I'm co-sleeping but would rather my baby was in the cot (attached to the bed). It's less than a foot away but you'd think it was on another planet (she probably thinks it is!) as she just won't sleep in it, despite using the same cosy mattress that she sleeps in quite happily during the day (although only up to 45 mins at a time).

Is there an age/developmental stage when babies are better able to cope with sleeping on their own? How do I break this habit? It wasn't supposed to be like this! She's 2 months old.

At 3 years old?! Grin

Sounds like my DD and 2 inches was too far away for her... she's just now at 10 months accepting sleeping a foot away from me for part of the night....

Some are ready early, some later....

Oh dear, that's what I feared :(

If I put her a few inches from me, she wriggles across. Part of the problem is that I have to feed her to sleep, nothing else works, which is why we ended up co-sleeping (i'd fall asleep before she did!).

Has anyone out there managed it sooner?

Have you tried putting a really smelly top in the cot and letting your baby sleep on that so she is still sleeping with your smell?

I did this with dd when we moved her to her bedside cot and it worked a treat, she sleeps in their really well now. Might be worth a go.

I did try, but no luck. However that was a few weeks ago so I'll try it again.
