24 mth old early morning waking - at end of tether

Can anyone help? I've got a 24 month old ds who has consistently woken at 5.30-6am since 7 months, sometimes earlier. I now have a 5 month old dd who sleeps well, but is still wanting night time feeds and the combination of waking during the night and then getting up anytime from 5am is killing me, and my dh!

We've tried putting to bed earlier, putting to bed later, increasing day time naps (he'll happily sleep up to 2.5 hrs at lunchtime if I let him), decreasing day time naps, ignoring him, rushing to him at the first squeak, cuddling, stroking, stating calm, getting cross, you name it, we've tried it! I even went to a sleep consultant who was certain that it was being overtired that was waking him up, and there was a little improvement but nothing major. The only time we had good sleep was when he was sleeping in a cosy little box room in our new house for a few weeks but we moved dd into there when she was two months and it's been back to the bad old days since he's been in the bigger room.

Does anyone have bright ideas? Should I return to the advice given by sleep consultant, or perhaps move him back to the little room and put dd in the big room?

Any thoughts gratefully received!

Why not try the smaller room? It might help. It doesn't sound ridiculously early to me - but then I am an early riser myself Grin - is he old enough to just stay in his room with his toys or does he demand attention?

I thought I would update you on this. A gro-clock has sorted us all out and we now have lots of lovely lie-ins until a record breaking 6.45am! Well, we did until my DD started waking up at 5am a few weeks ago. Here we go again!
