Why can't my 5 month old settle for bedtime but is fine settling himself for naps?

Help! It's driving both me and my dh crazy!!
We moved ds into his cot for daytime naps about 2 weeks ago. He is a little angel for his naps, put him in his cot and he's asleep within 5 mins no crying at all. We moved him into his cot for bedtime (in his own room) last week and he screams and screams if we leave the room. I feed him just before bed until he's almost asleep and then place him in his cot-he then somehow wakes himself up and screams blue murder. We don't leave him crying (tried that once before and have decided not to go down that route) but reassure him, pat him, sing, stroke etc and he will literally cry for hours......what can we do?
Any advice is much appreciated... X

P.s ds started screaming when put down at night before we moved him into the cot and his own room. We thought perhaps it was because he was too cramped in his Moses basket so I'm sure it's not the move that has disrupted him...

What do you do for naps? Very impressed that your baby goes to sleep happily for naps. Mine fights it tooth and nail so i rock her.
