Is 40 mins per day enough nap-time for 15 monther?

DS has never been a fan of sleep (especially naps). He was, until recently, on two naps a day. Just recently he's been fighting his afternoon one, to the point that I just give up.

So, he's only getting one nap per day in the morning, and that only lasts for 40 mins (very occasionally he'll do a doubler of 80 mins, but that's pretty rare).

Is this just a blip that I need to ride through (he's got a big back tooth coming through - could that be affecting things), or should I be trying something else?

Any thoughts/advice greatfully received.

both mine were on one nap by that age. I did push it later and later so it was just after lunch and then it wasnt such a long time between the nap and bedtime

Ah, thanks Seona. I wasn't sure if he was still a bit young to drop to one, so that's encouraging.

mine dropped to 1 nap around 11 months and ds dropped them totally by the age of 2!! It was a sad day when he gave them up (no peace for me any more)

mine was on 1 nap by then too. However I think 40mins is a wee bit on the short side & he may well end up overtired by bedtime, especially if this nap is in the morning.

What time does he take his nap? Like seona, when my LO dropped to 1 nap we did it just before lunch at about 11am, & then over time (several months) it has gradually shifted later. At almost 18 months its now 12.30-2.30. You might find that by gradually shifting the nap later by 15mins/week it will get longer.

Blimey seona, no naps by 2?! I ought to be making the most of my 40 mins now then, just in case!

Thanks omama - I didn't think 40 minutes was enough. Good advice re. pushing back his first nap a bit - 12.30-2.30 sounds wonderful!

At the moment, his nap time varies from day to day, depending on what time he wakes up (usually somewhere between 6 and 8am). He usually goes down for his nap approx. 3 hours after he wakes.

I think I'll try out a gradual shift and hope for the best!

Thanks

If he's going down after 3hrs I would definitely try that. Good luck!!!!

Hi OP - DD was exactly the same at the age - had 2 40 min naps but dropped the pm one and then was exhausted by bedtime. We nudged the am one later and later and lo and behold it got longer! She is now 18 months and wakes at around 6.30am, naps around 11am for 1.5 hours and then goes to bed about 6.45pm/7.15pm ish. We a tough couple of maths while she transitioned to one nap though.
