if you didn't swaddle, what did you do?

DD is 3weeks and clearly does not enjoy being swaddled, mainly I think because she struggles with farts and poos and spends a fair amount of time straining and stretching in her sleep. We tightly swaddled DS from birth til about 6months so I don't really know what to do if I don't swaddle DD - do I wrap a blanket round her under arms? How do I make sure she won't pull blankets up over her head? She's still a bit little for the grobag I think, and I worry her shoulder and hands will get cold...

I used a blanket under the armpits and then tucked under the cot both sides as DD1 and DD2 liked having their hands free

Gro-bag. Best thing ever IMO!

With mits...albeit they never stayed on.

My DS is a bit big for swaddling now, he just gets tucked in tight-ish with the blanket up to his armpits, he likes having his arms free. I tried tucking his arms in but he hated it and I was worried his hands would get cold. Then I figured if they were that cold he'd want to leave them under the blanket!

ok, so don't worry about her arms and hands then? Can always put another top layer on her I guess

I don't think cold hands bother them? DD is 2.5 weeks and I use a blanket which is loosely wrapped over her arms. She sleeps on her side though as she has wind and I suspect silent reflux, like her brother :( when she jerks in her sleep, her top arm moves about but doesn't bother her.

Tbh though she wakes so frequently I rarely put her in her basket at night - she's on me most nights!

Congratulations by the way :)

Half swaddle as others have suggested. My daughter didn't seem to like the swaddle and slept in a grobag from birth - but she was 9lbs7ozs...

Nevercan · 20/12/2011 18:18

I was told that if you touch the side of their neck and that feels warm, then don't worry if their hands and feet feel cold as their core body is warm...

Gapants · 20/12/2011 18:21

If their chest is warm, but cold hands not to worry.

We swaddle with arms out and DD on her side, then lay another blanket on top, dependant upon temp.

What about the baby grows with the little foldy bits at the end for their hands. we use them, from Sainsbos.

also good to hear about you puting babies on their sides, DD also much prefers this

my DD was exactly the same with farting and not liking the swaddle, op. However, i found i could swaddle her once she'd dropped off or very nearly had and she'd be quite happy. However once she got to 3 months and started to try and suck her thumb for comfort it seemed harsh to swaddle her, so now i just tuck the blankets in nice and tight so she's secure but can still get to her hands.
