Is this all because of too long daytime naps?

Have had a bit of a 'lightbulb moment' reading over some previous threads in this section but want to know if I'm right and to ask advice.

DS is 21 months old, has generally slept pretty well. He had a bad cold a fortnight ago which seemed to knock him off routine a bit and made him unsettled at night.

Now the cold has passed he seems stuck in the pattern of having a crap sleeping routine at night :( I need help and advice!

He's always napped well and still naps for around 2 hours a day! If he sleeps beyond 3:30pm I wake him up, though, which he usually isn't happy about.

The past week or so he's been wanting to sleep in our bed with DH and I - which is okay for a few nights, but not ideal in the long-term, so DH and I want to nip that in the bud.

Getting DS to actually go to sleep at night is the hard thing - wailing, shouting for us, wanting to play etc etc. We've tried all the tricks of offering him a drink of milk, picking him up, putting him down, letting him cry and it just doesn't work. He will sleep in our arms or in our bed.

He goes to bed at 8pm and has done for past few months, used to sleep through till 7am or thereabouts, which was bliss!

Please can someone pat themselves on the back if they've read this epic post Blush and also give me some tips on getting DS to actually go to bed to SLEEP, not to want to play, read books etc.

bump, please!

Took us until 10pm to get him settled last night after two hours of fighting sleep and crying, and he got up at 7am this morning.

Um, No Cry Sleep Solution by Elizabeth Pantely (? Surname, but something like that) - works for us getting DS off to sleep.

Now all I need is someone to tell me how to stop DS waking at 1.30/2.00am and refusing to sleep unless it's with DH or I Hmm
