20 month old crying in her sleep- wwyd?

The last two months have seen my daughters sleep unravel. Initially she was teething and waking for calpol, then after about a week she'd wake and find it difficult to get back to sleep, so we have a bit of a night waking pattern. But over the last 2 weeks shes been crying in her sleep. Maybe 30-40 mins at a time. Its getting more and more frequent - it was the occasional night now its every night
I do let her cry a bit at night generally, patting etc we know from bitter experience does not help her go back to sleep. She often has a jammer as she's getting to sleep - by which I mean whingy crying that is over in about 10 mins. She seems to need to do this to actually go to sleep.

But back to the sleep crying, I do get worried if crying goes on for longer than 15mins and I go check and see if I can comfort her or if she needs anything (even tho I can hear from the type of cryng that she doesn't - but after a while I question myself). She writhes away from me if I pick her up, doesnt want water (cries more). She really is asleep, eyes closed etc but the crying is quite full on. Its hard to wake her - more than five mins of calling her, lights on and everything. When she wakes shes looks sleepy and grumpy - and rather puzzled about whats going on. She'll often go back to sleep fine - but the crying can start again some time later.
I dont know what to do, any ideas?

Anyone? I really dont know what to do. I feel I cant leave her as I get worried something is wrong but I feel going to her seems pretty pointless.

My little one sometimes cries in her sleep too. I presume it's baby nightmares or a little bit of gas working its way through the system....but mostly I'm guessing. Sorry I can't offer more advice but wanted to let you know, you're not the only one x

It sounds like night terrors which DS1 used to get about the same age. Not sure what advice to give sorry-we used to wake him up, lights on, saying his name loudly in his ear etc. Then once awake give him some milk and/or cuddle and he'd go back to sleep. but it sounds like you've been doing that already?

Thanks for the responses. It is getting a bit less now - so fingers crossed it was just a phase. I have decided to let her sleep through it because she cries more as I try to wake her. I find it scary to be honest - what's she dreaming about thats so bad?...sigh
