my dh's parents live 5 hours away and v soon we have to make the long trek up there. last time we went my dd (now 16 months) had an absolute nightmare (so did we!) she only slept for about an hour the entire trip and screamed the rest- we even went at night! a friend of mine who is a pharmacy dispenser reccommended we give phenigan to help her sleep but im in two minds- anyone else used it and if so how was it/any side effects etc?

I have used it on dd a few times, it does work but made dd very grumpy the next day, apparently it makes them feel like they have a hang over.

It can also go the opposite way and make them hyper.

I know she's a bit younger than my dd (now 2)but we bought a portable dvd player with screens that fit onto the back of the front headrests and took some dvd's e.g. Boo, Brum, pingu, etc and dd watched them when we went to visit the in-laws (the drive there took 7.5 hours and the way back took 6 hours including a 1 hour stop). It has been the best £100 we have ever spent as it kept her occupied and happy. We also give her snacks, juice and had books, paper and pencils, crayons, etc to keep her interested. The dvd player was from argos.

I personally wouldnt like to drug my dd to keep her quiet.

I second the portable DVD player. Best money I ever spent.

My dd2 was perscribed phenergan at about a year old, because she was sleeping only about 2 hours a night.

It worked for about 2 nights and then it didn't seem to have as much effect. Also she was alot tireder in the day and I was worried it would effect her development, and so I stopped using it.

TBH I wouldn't use it in the day just to keep a child quiet.
