1-year-old's naps gone to pot. What to do?

DS is getting more and more tricky around nap times.

He is ready to sleep 3-3.5 hours after waking. He then needs a gap of 3.5 hours before the next nap. And then he cannot drop off at bed time until 4 hours after waking from his second nap.

THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH HOURS IN THE DAY! I've resorted to a mix of keeping him awake one day so he just has a single nap (grumpy) and other days waking him up after about 45 mins so that he can have two naps (grumpy, plus 1hr+ of trying to get him down).

As far as I can see he's too young to drop to one nap but I'm at a loss. Any ideas? (We're a lentil-weaving co-sleeping family)

Um...

Both of mine went to one nap at around 12 months, so I don't think it's too young, per se. Although it might be for your DS.

When DD2 was tricky with her naps I just started pushing her nap back gradually (maybe 20 mins a day) til it was after lunch. She was grumpy for a day or two but suddenly just became quite happy with that routine.

Sorry - the Um... was me racking my brains, wasn't sarcasm or anything!

Hmmm my DS was 1 last week and I was having a similar problem. We also recently moved countries and are now 5 hours behind what we were so he was all to pot. All of us needed a new routine! He was becoming more and more furious going down for his early nap so I have just cut it out. I have to make sure he is really busy for the whole morning or else it is hell, but most days it works fine. He was always an early riser (5.30/6.00am most mornings). Our new routine is wake around 7.30am (hooray!), bottle, breakfast, play etc, lunch at 12ish then nap at 1.30pm. He always sleeps until about 4.00pm and then goes down a litlle later, usually by 8.00pm so that daddy has a bit of time with him when he gets back form work. I know what you mean though, it is so difficult and once you think you've got there it all changes again. Good luck!
