How do I lose the dummy that suddenly needs popping in every two hours for my 3mth DS?

HI,
We gave our Son a dummy as his head was squashed during birth and it was the only thing that soothed him until his Craino Os. got to wok on him. He is now a very happy 3mth old but loves hi dummy. We only give it at nap/bed time and its an off switch. Lst night he cried every two hours for it to be put back in. I want to stop this straight away!! Suggestions?

He sleeps from 7pm until 0130 for a 7oz feed then again about 0430 for a 3oz which im in the process of reducing for two oz to encourage him to sleep through.

I had the same and I am afraid I just went cold turkey. For the first night I had to pat his bottom heavily (he slept on his tummy) and I gave him a bunny to cuddle which he spent a lot of the time trying to suck the ear. It was hellish for two hours but he did go to sleep and never needed it again. He now sucks his thumb!

DS1 was a dummy user till he was 2.5 years old (went cold turkey with him and had a dummy fairy etc = nightmare!). So when DS2 came along and the dummy needed replacing every 10 minutes, I couldn't bear the idea of having to get in and out of bed etc. Looking abck I have NO REGRETS and am thrilled to have DS2 who can self comfort.

DC3 on the way and I will avoid the dummy at all costs!

Yeah, I had the same but waited until four months. I didn't find it bad at all. I was totally prepared for three days of hell but actually I think it was more my habit than hers. She cried a bit at naps and bedtime but not horrendously. It wasn't the miracle cure for night wakings that I thought it might be but it was definitely better.

She found her thumb at six months and learnt to sleep on her tummy and things improved greatly after that. We just have to cure the early waking now :(

Hi, we had the same but didn't go cold turkey til 6 months old as SIDS website recommends this. When we did lose it, it really wasn't too bad and we gave ds a muslin as a comfort which he still has at 18 months but unlike the dummy he doesn't lose it constantly thru the night.

Hmm, well I can tell you what I did when my PFB was that age. I slept on the floor beside her cot so I could give her back her dummy whenever it fell out.
I must have been certifiable. In the end she was sleeping with one in each hand and one in her mouth.
I think you have two options - co-sleep or go cold turkey.

I actually have gone cold turkey,yes he's cried (I stayed with him while he cried it out and gently comforted him),yes i've nearly given in at 5am BUT last night (day two) he slept the most he ever has! I heard him wake a few times but by the time I'd grabbed the monitor to see him and get out of bed he had self soothed himself back to sleep. He's never done this before. He's desperate still to suck on anything that goes near his mouth though. I've tried to encourage him to suck his thumb but he can't grasp that yet.
