5 month old waking up distressed during night

Hi everyone

DD (23 weeks) had been sleeping through the night from her dreamfeed to 8am for about a fortnight. However, the last three nights she has woken up almost screaming at around 2am. Ordinarily when she wakes during the night she has let out a small yelp, almost a shout, to wake us; nothing like as distressed as she has the last few nights.

She has two bottom teeth already, which didn't cause much more than a little grumble, but I do wonder whether this is teething pain?

She doesn't want anything when she wakes- nappy fine, refuses anything other than a mouthful of milk. She just seems to want a cuddle then settles quickly.

Although she is almost screaming when she wakes, her eyes are tight shut.

Any ideas?

This happened to my DD for a few weeks and it passed. I can't help on why it happens though, sorry, just keep up the cuddles & it will stop

Agree with newbabynewmum. It does pass, although it's scary when it does happen. My DD has always done it after 1 hour asleep, and usually when is overtired.

Wind? Only think I can think off.

No help to offer I'm afraid but bumping / watching with interest as my 5mo DS has started to do something similar. He's worked through the screaming at 2-3am and now wakes at 3-4am perfectly happy, has a feed and then plays with his hands / rolls around the cot for an hour before sleeping again. I'm not sure if I should be bothered by this (except that we live in the world's smallest flat and he's sleeping in our room and coos quite loudly) .... in fact I'm on MN trying to figure out if this is actually a problem.

He's definitely not over tired as he has 3 good naps (1.5 hrs, 2.25 hrs and 45 mins) every day...
