what is going on and what can I do?

my previously brilliantly sleeping 2.4yr old DD is now waking sometime between midnight and 2am and crying / moaning / screaming on and off for 4 hours. if i go into her, she screams even more when i leave again.

if i cuddle her, she screams when i put her down. if i just leave her (eeek), she moans, cries, shouts until i can't stand it and go into her

she is worse if she has no daytime sleep - the 2 days on which she has missed a nap, she woke at 12 and stopped crying at 4am.

what can i do? last night i had 90 mins sleep between her and DS (who gets up at 6am for a wee)...

oh and calpol makes no difference; she is not hot, cold, hungry, thirsty or, apparently, in pain.

when she wakes she cries 'i want cuddles and i want to get up'...
