Thought 11 weekold slept well but apparently not..!?

DD is 11 weeks and her night sleeping pattern is usually:

7pm - 12.30am (dreamfeeding has no effect on this wake up time)
5-10 min feed - straight back to sleep

12.40am - 3am
10 -20 min feed - straight back to sleep

3.20am -5.30am
20 min feed - nappy - longer to settle

6ish - 8am
up for the day

I thought this was okay (esp. as DH and I get our evenings to relax), but according to lots of people I meet in RL including HV she shouldn't be waking 3 times at night any more!

Any thoughts or tips?

Thank you!

Hi Cocoa, my DS is 12 weeks and his nighttime sleep is similar to your DD's on a good night! On a good night he goes down early at around 6.30pm and will wake anytime from between 11 -1am and then again at around 3 & then 5. He has also had recent nights with much more frequent wakings and a couple where he only woke once or twice. At this age my DD was still waking up every couple of hours or so. I think if DS went to bed later then he may drop one of the wakings but I am finding it hard to get him to nap later in the day so he needs an early bedtime. It sounds to me as if you are doing great and that lots of babies this age are still up during the evening and so may have one less waking iyswim. Hopefully others will be along to give you some more helpful tips!

Sounds great - some and repeat some babies do sleep more than that -but in my view that are just annoying and can be ignored - and I think people lie quite a bit as well
some babies are sleeping much much less than that
if you are happy and baby is don't worry too much

Flisspaps · 18/05/2011 15:06

Your HV is talking out of her arse. Some much older children still wake 3 times a night.

She'll probably tell you that you're doing something wrong when DD is not sleeping 12 hours at 6 months.

Ignore. Babies haven't read the sleep books, it's the one big fault!

LoonyRationalist · 18/05/2011 15:07

IME that is very good for a 11 week old Grin

cocoachannel · 18/05/2011 15:43

Thanks all. Have had bizarre advise from HV throughout, and as moving says some people do seem to lie, or mislead, on the question of how well their babies sleep...

to be fair i think its you almost never hear about the bad sleepers - as for some reason people seem to think how well your baby sleeps is a reflection on your parenting - and I do think people forget what babies do when - no excuse for the HV through

As long as you're happy with your DC's sleep there's absolutely no need to worry about it or change anything! And as others have said, sleep patterns vary a lot between babies. Mine slept through from 6.30pm to roughly 5am by 12 weeks, whereas a friend's was waking up to 4 times a night. But like your DC, hers would go straight back to sleep after a feed, whereas mine always took ages to settle down again...

DuelingFanjo · 19/05/2011 08:08

my ds is just 5 months and wakes at least 3 times.
your health visitor is talking rubbish. Every baby is different.
I too feel lucky that my DS goes straight back to sleep after a feed.

davidtennantsmistress · 19/05/2011 08:12

sounds fine to me - DS was still waking that often after a year, at least once a night there after until he was about 3. & came in with me until he was 4, so tbh you know your baby, she's still only a dot.

as fliss says the baby's not read the books or been told by the HV what to do.

sometimes I get so cross with HV's - mine told me DS was over weight at 6 months & i'd have to watch his diet/snacks - erm yes i've only just started weaning you silly moo. (not a fan)

honestly thou you know your DD, she's growing/weeing/pooping I assume, happy and content so I shouldn't worry until she's older.

Fantail · 20/05/2011 12:51

erm, my 11 week DD is doing about the same and so are pretty much all of the babies in my NCT group. I reckon if she is easyish to settle then she will drop feeds as and when she doesn't need them any more.

I reckon a lot of people lie about have different interpretations of the meaning of sleeping through.

Zimm · 21/05/2011 18:18

Hv talking utter rubbish. At 12 weeks my DD had 1 night waking (she was fantastic, is now a dreadful sleeper) and HV suggested I try to cut that out by leaving her to cry!!!

izpie · 22/05/2011 07:01

Sounds normal to me, my dd is 5 months and has only just gone from 3 wake ups to 2, although she is now up for the day at 5am - bleurgh

Clairencharlie · 22/05/2011 14:51

Was really pleased to read your post! My 11 week old DS2 is doing almost exactly the same feeding/waking pattern - even to the point of having a job to resettle as the night goes on. I found with DS1 people liked to say their baby was sleeping through but actually they did every now and then rather than night after night (with some irritating exceptions). I've decided to only talk to mums who have night wakers this time! :)

DorisDoesntDance · 22/05/2011 17:51

my 3.5 month old baby sleeps roughly like this, except he doesn't always go to bed before 10pm.

i think/thought it's normal and he seems happy and healthy and I'm not overtired, so... letting him get on with it really! just wish he'd sleep more regularly for the early part of the evening.
