Come and tell me about 7 year olds and sleep requirements...

DS is 7, goes to bed around 7:30pm but can often be awake reading in bed for a good 45 minutes after that, and it can sometimes be nearer to 9pm before he actually falls asleep. He then sleeps soundly till around 7:15 in the morning. So I reckon he's getting between 10 and 11 hours sleep most nights, sometimes more depending on how tired he is. He wakes up full of beans and seems to have plenty of energy.

So does this sound about right in terms of sleep for a 7 year old or not enough?

Only ask because we've had comments from school about making sure our kids are getting enough sleep and stating that at this age they still need 12 hours sleep per night and we need to make sure they are going to bed early enough. Which is fine, I can make sure he goes to bed early but I can't force him to fall asleep! We have a calm consistent bedtime routine, he has half an hour of TV after tea, then bath, drink of warm milk and a bedtime story...

Am I missing something or does this all sound fairly typical for a child his age?

DS is also 7. He goes to bed about 8 and is asleep by about 9. Wakes up about 7:30 or so. So around 10.5 hours. He will sleep a little longer at weekends but not a lot. I think some children need more sleep than others. I wouldn't worry about your DS personally :)
