Do your three month olds sleep through the night (mine doesn't)

Mine doesn't though she only usually wakes as we take her upstairs with us about 11 and has quick feed then back to sleep and then once in night, though she does think mornign is about 5am alas. But many of my antenatal people's babies sleep through night and wondered whether I am the only parent whose baby doesn't yet.

Mine is 6 months and still doesn't. Ante natal group are lying or drugging their babies embellishing.

At 3 months DS went to bed at 7, had dream feed at 10:30 and woke up at 7.

Up until 2 months he didn't sleep at night unless on my chest.

DD woke up several times at night at 3 months. She improved although took a while Hmm.

I could imagine other people saying that your DD slept through as different people have different views on sleeping through. Some involve very short lengths of time asleep.

pointythings · 27/03/2011 20:42

DD1 - yes, from 10 weeks. Down at 8-ish, dreamfeed at 10, through till 7.30. All this and BF - boy, did I feel smug.
Then DD2 came along, caught nursery colds off DD1, wouldn't stop growing or feeding and was still having 2 full-on feeds until about 1 year old. At least she always fed (both sides), winded and fell asleep in about 15 minutes so could have been worse, but it taught me that babies are all different...

CatIsSleepy · 27/03/2011 20:44

dd1 did (with a dreamfeed), dd2 didn't til she was nearly 9 months

not sleeping through at 3 months is pretty normal

carve133 · 27/03/2011 20:50

Agree with Lawrie. Many writers on the subject use a definition of 5 hours in a row as sleeping through at this age, not 12 hours! Sounds like your DD is doing just fine.

Quite a lot of impression management can go on in antenatal groups. Take a large pinch of salt with you when you meet up.

Hulababy · 27/03/2011 20:57

My DD did at 3 months. It lasted about 5 or 6 weeks. She then became a dreadful sleeper an didn't sleep through again til she was 20 months old!

my dd is 3mths, she goes to sleep at 7pm, i then give her a feed at 11:30pm when i go to bed, she then sleeps till 5am ish, sometimes not that long, has a feed and then goes back to sleep till 8am.

so your baby sounds normal :)

PaigeTurner · 27/03/2011 21:09

My DS goes 6pm (can't keep him awake any longer) until around 2am, then 6.30.

I don't like the idea of a dream feed so I'm happy to have him getting up when he's hungry. I go to bed v early though.

mumatron · 27/03/2011 22:09

dd2 is 11 weeks, she goes down at 6.30pm (cannot keep her awake either)
she sleeps until 6.30-7.00 most nights. she will not take a dream feed, no matter what time we try.

it's not as good as it sounds though. i find it hard to keep up with the amount of feeds she wants during the day. she should be on about 32-35oz in 24 hours (ff), but she sleeps for 12 of those and she refuses to take anything over 5oz at a time.

i would love her to have at least one night feed if it meant i could get more than 1.5 hours between a feed during the day!

RitaMorgan · 27/03/2011 22:12

At 3 months ds slept through (with 2-3 feeds Grin)
At 7.5 months he still sleeps through (with 1 feed)

I'm sure one day we'll get 10-12 hours sleep with no feeds, but not yet.

yellowflowers · 27/03/2011 22:14

yes dd puts herself to sleep about 6.30 too - I tried to make it later but she won't have it, though am hoping the clocks changing may have an impact (it didn't today!)

mumatron, how big is your baby if she needs that much formula?

my dd is 15lb at 16wks old and she has 5 feeds over a 24hr period of 4-5oz each time, so less than the recomended amount on the packet... but she is happy, content and putting on weight etc.

is your dd really hungry every hour and a half?!!

maxpower · 28/03/2011 20:23

Both mine we're sleeping through the night by 3 months - but I genuinely believe that was an exception rather than the rule

mumatron · 28/03/2011 22:26

4mad she's about 14-15lb now. hv recommends 30+ oz but she takes anything between 25-35 in 24 hours. she normally only takes 2.5oz per feed max. when she's like that she'll feed roughly evry hour and a half. sometimes she'll suprise me and take 5oz and go a bit longer. she will not take so much as a mouthful of milk after 6.30pm and very rarely has anything before 7am.

i give up trying to work her out tbh. i feed her as much as she wants as often as she wants. she's growing well so i have no concerns. it would just be nice to get a bit of a gap in the day.

i'm sure she'll get better when she starts on food, only another 14 weeks to go Grin

Most people who say their 3 month olds are sleeping through either lying or have an odd definition of "all night"!

sotough · 29/03/2011 03:31

interesting to hear these experiences. my DS, who is now 3.5yrs old, did sleep through, from the age of about 11 weeks, 7pm to 7am with one uncomplicated dream feed at 11pm. and yes, i was super smug. the smile is now well and truly wiped off my face as DD, who is three months, is an absolutely hopeless sleeper. i've done nothing different with her to what i did with him; and yet, here i am on mumsnet at 3.30am. says it all really. she goes down well at 7pm but from 2am it's a shambles.

snowmummy · 29/03/2011 09:07

My first 2 DC slept through from 11 weeks. I'm obviously not expecting her to yet, but I get the feeling DC3 will never sleep through, ever.

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 29/03/2011 09:16

at 3mo dd1 was waking 2-3 times nightly on average. slept through at 6.5mo.
dd2 was waking 1-2hourly
dd2 has just done 7pm-6am for the last 2 nights at exactly 5mo. the clocks changing has thrown her a little and i am sure normal service will be resumed when she cottons on.

mumatron · 29/03/2011 09:47

sotough my dd2 was not much of a sleeper until i put her in her cot. she was like a different baby after that.

all my dc have been creatures of habit. Even when they went through phases of no sleep there was a pattern to it.

oh, and even though my dd is asleep, from about 4 am i am awake as she makes a ridiculous amount of noise in her sleep. heavy breathing and throwing herself around the cot.

Georgimama · 29/03/2011 09:50

I don't suppose it would be helpful to tell you about my four year old who still doesn't?

No, thought not.

mummytime · 29/03/2011 09:54

DS my pfb, slept through from 10 weeks. DD1 I have no idea when she slpet through, consistently probably older than 3. By 3 she had taught herself to climb into our bed without waking me. I can still remember the feeling of well-being when she slept for 7 hours continious at about 12 months, it didn't last long but gave me hope.

DD2 wasn't as early as DS, but didn't kill me like DD1, who woke at 10 ready to party.

You just have to find something that works for you, and don't compare.

nethunsreject · 29/03/2011 09:56

Dc 1 was fab sleeper and slept throught at 5 mths.

Ds2 still up every 2 hrs on a good night at 10mths

4madboys · 29/03/2011 10:22

ah mummatron my dd is like that at times, only wants 2-3oz at a feed, generally she now takes 4oz a feed, sometimes as much as 5oz, she is having 20-25oz a day but only wants to feed four hourly in the day and then goes two 5 hour stretches at night, i cannot get her to feed more, she just isnt interested, doesnt seem to be a hungry baby, yet is gaining weight well!

tbh i am more than happy with dds sleep, 7pm-11:30pm, feed and then through till 5amish, feed and then back to sleep till anytime between 7-9am :)

my first three were terrible sleepers, ds1 didnt sleep through till 3yrs, ds2 was better, but in our bed till 2 and a bit years and bfed at bedtime and morning till nearly 4yrs old! ds3 was sort of inbetween, not as good as ds2 but not as bad as ds1!

then we had ds4 who was a revelation that babies CAN sleep, from a young age he slept well, he sucks his thumb tho and i am sure that has a lot to do with it, bizarelly tho we have had problems with him now at just 3yrs as he is having nightmares etc, so he is regularly waking up when dd is asleep!! gahh

still they do all sleep eventually! my eldest is 11 now and from being a baby/toddler who liked to start the day at 5am! we now struggle to get him out of bed! Grin its all swings and roundabouts.
