Prem 9wo won't settle after night feed - colic? Just wants cuddles? What?

DS2 is now 9 wks after rocky start including being 5 weeks prem with IUGR and spending three weeks in SCBU.

Mostly he's quite contented and happy, self-settles during the day and at my bedtime (11pm ish).

He does seem to get very gripey and after a few nights where he wouldn't settle at all, we tried Colief which seemed to really help.

He wakes for one night feed, somewhere between 2am-4am. Takes feed, often falls asleep on the boob, but within a few mins of going into the moses basket will be awake and making a grunting/straining noise.

Eventually I give up/take pity on him and settle him next to me, where we sleep for the rest of the night. I don't think this is a long-term solution, though.

Is there such a thing as colic that really only strikes badly at 2am? Or do you think he just wants cuddles? Is there anything I can do short of sleep training or leaving him to cry? Don't want to do that, esp when he's so tiny.

Congrats on your baby! Sorry he had a tricky start, but that is great that he is doing well.

It i pretty common/normal for young babies to want to be near their parent during the night. Makes sense if you think about our cave dwelling days. Personally I would go with it. My first ds was like this and by about 5 mths slept all night, either in his room or with us. Ds2 isn't so good at sleeping, but they all get there and it is VERY early days.
