DS can climb out of cot - is it time for a bed?

Not sure what to do so thought i'd get some advice. DS has just turned 2. He can easily climb in and out of his cot but tends not to during the night, he cries or shouts if he wakes up and waits for us to go to him (usually). He does, however, climb in and out of it sometimes when just playing during the day which worries me a bit in case he gets his foot stuck or something and ends up hurting himself.

All advice I've been given says not to change to a bed until absolutely necessary and as he hasn't outgrown the cot physically I'm not sure if we'e reached this time yet!

WWYD?

PS he already uses a duvet as he starting shunning grobag a couple of months ago... shuns duvet too - i have to sneak back in and cover him up after he goes to sleep...

I've been told that as sson as they can climb out of a cot then there is no point in it. But in saying that if he tends not to climb out at night then you might as well leave him in it for a while longer - if he starts to make more regular escapes then it might be worth changing him over.

My DD1 went to a bed at 17 months, DD2 at 20 months with no problems. 2 sounds a fine age to me.

does he still nap in the day? If he does then you might want to think about moving now as an overtired and manic 2 year old will climb out of the cot and worse. Children often drop the nap before they are ready and so you get a lovely transition period when they turn into t-rexes at bedtime because they are so overtired
Getting him used to settling in a bed and staying there when he is not overtired is a good thing.

Yep, ds was in a bed well before 2. He still gets out every single night, but always gets himself back in and snuggled up. I just close the door so he can't actually escape. All he has in there is a basket of Brio track and some books, all of which I'm happy for him to play with before bed. We go in, I tuck him in and read a story, say goodnight and then say he can play for a few minutes. It's never been more than 15 minutes of play before he's pooped, and since allowing him to do this, he finally sleeps through at 2.7

DD got a bed for her second birthday and sleeps like a dream in it as she was always getting a limb caught in the bars of the cot!
