How old is too old to swaddled? Sleeping bag aimss

My 6mo appreciates being swaddled for naps - it works so I still do it. At night he sleeps best on his side tucked very firmly under blankets. When he wakes in the night it is because an arm has escaped - pop the wriggling limb back under the blanket and dummy back in and he is asleep again in a minute.
But I want to get him into an unswaddled sleeping bag. How can I do this? I have tried and he just can't handle the freedom. I end up tucking him up tight with a sheet.
How long did you swaddled for and do some never make it into sleeping bags?

Dd was swaddled until she was nearly 8 months old. I tried periodically to put her in a sleeping bag, with disastrous results, and then one night she was just fine.

As long as your ds is happier swaddled, I don't think there is any problem with carrying on.
