can't get toddler back to sleep when she wakes

I don't know the reason why she is waking - Christmas over-stimulation, teething? but when she wakes that's basically it - she will not go back to sleep. On Boxing Day she woke at 1 and basically fell back to sleep at 5.30, yesterday woke at 5 and that was it. Tonight (as you can see) woke at about 2.30 - still awake 2 hours later. She just thinks it's time to get up and shouts and cries until she gets her way and someone takes her downstairs. She wants to watch TV or Elmo's song - or this is what she says. DP and I don't seem to be able to agree on an approach which isn't doing anyone in the family any good.

She is exhausted and cranky, I am about to lose the plot - I have a lot of work to do and am only getting about 4 hours sleep a night. She is 2 in a couple of weeks - usually has no nap (although does when she wakes at god knows what hour) - had been sleeping pretty well 7-7 until this last bout of horror.

any ideas?

Could you lie with her until she falls asleep? I would def not give in to tv.

what mdavza said. I did this with my dcs if they woke.

am trying to maintain firm line about not going downstairs when this happens: but she is just full of beans and chat and it's difficult to get her to settle. Will keep slogging away...thanks
