naps in a cot - how do you resettle a baby who shouldn't be awake yet?

dts are 12 weeks old. we cosleep at night. dt2 is happy to be rocked to sleep and held in arms/sling for naps. he stirs often, and I just jiggle about a bit and he goes back. but it's a bit wearing with dt1 and ds1 too, and it would be fantastic if one would nap in a cot.

dt2 most likely candidate, and today I rocked him in arms till he was sleepy but calm, then put him in cot and kept rocking his bum till he was asleep - success - the first time he has ever fell asleep not in someone's arms! but he woke 30 mins later. normally he naps 1-2 hours. so I went in at first sound, tried jiggling again. he got more upset so I picked him up and rocked. in the end, I had to put him in sling (his favourite place) to calm him down enough and he's having a very fitful sleep there now (more so than normal).

ideally I would like to be able to get him back to sleep in the cot. what should I do? I was wary of leaving him in the cot once he got upset because I want it to be a positive association for him, like the sling is, but thinking perhaps I was too keen to pick him up. not sure what's best to do. ds1 didn't nap in cot till about 1 year old. any advice from people experienced with cot napping?

This has just happened to me!! I didn't know what to do. I tried to get her back to sleep and she just got more and more upset. In the end I went into our routine again but well ahead of schedule, feed, play and sleep just sped it up a bit so she would'nt get super over tired, but it will perhaps mess up the bedtime routine I'm trying to institute. She's gone to sleep now, how long to let her sleep I don't know!! I'm such a clueless first time mum.

Sorry, not trying to hijack your thread, I just will be looking for the answer with interest!

not a hijack, I share your pain :) impressed you've got as far as a bedtime routine! how old is your dd?

12 wks also, just started this yesterday, I have a live thread on this board about it. I wanted to get ahead of the curve ball that is 4 month sleep regression (it would at least be good to have something to regress from lol) so far so good but its only day 2 and looking like it is going to go pete tong already.
