"the better they sleep during the day, the better they sleep at night" - do you agree?

So said my mum this lunchtime. Never thought about it before but I think she might be right! ds hardly slept during the day yesterday, so I thought I was in for a peaceful evening and nighttime - how wrong was I, he was still wide awake at 2am!!!! I'm interested in whether you've found this to be true too.

Absolutely. DS will not sleep as well unless he has had a good 1 - 2 hour nap in the day, often not waking until 4pm. He is then back in bed at 8pm.

When you first read the sentence, you think, what a load of nonsense.
Then, when you think about it, you realise how true it is.
Like Miaou says, why didn't this occur to us before ?

I agree too thats why i want my 21 month old ds to sleep but he is unaware of this thread.

If jess has 2.5 hours during the day (14 months) she is an angel at night - if like today she has had 1.5 hrs and refusing another nap now, she becomes a little terror - guess what sort of night im in for!

also known as 'sleep breeds sleep'. I totally agree. Putting it into practise however, is a completely different kettle of fish....

definitely agree, overtired child leads to bad nights sleep. Also if they have a late night they wake up early, and have a lie in the NEXT night.

The worst is when they have just stopped needing a nap (or so they think) but can't quite make it through the day....

hmmmmm. DS has a 2 hour nap 10-12am. Is generally up 5-10 times at night. he's 1.

My DM told me this before ds came to us, and she was absolutely right. His sleeping pattern wasn't bad when he came to us, but it wasn't great either and when I worked on his daytime naps his nighttime sleep improved.

it doesn't seem to be matter how much or how little ds sleeps in the day he still sleeps well at night
(sorry, that sounds a bit smug - it just amazes me that if he has 3 hours in the afternoon he still sleeps at 7pm or if he has 20 minutes in the pushchair he still manages it)

I sussed this out pretty quickly with my first - 18 years ago!!! But never found anyone who agreed with me .........until now!!!!!Yippeeeee!!!

I remember reading that it's actually quite good if your child has a later sleep during the day (although not TOO Late!) because then when they drop off for the night, they don't go immediately into a deep deep sleep, and consequently don't wake up at the crack of dawn.

This sort of seemed to work for DS...

I agree whole-heartedly, took me a while to really embrace the idea but I think it works
