Rolling on to tummy and waking himself

Can anyone suggest a solution to stop my 17 week old boy from rolling on to his tummy in the night and waking himself up when he can't get back again? He has been able to roll from back to front for the last couple of weeks and loves doing it - he does it whenever I put him on the floor for a kick-about, and even during nappy changes which is a bit annoying. But he is also now doing it in bed during the night and he then can't get himself into a comfortable sleeping position, so starts to cry. I think he is reaching for his thumb when he does it. He has always preferred to sleep on his side rather than his back.

Any help much appreciated!

When my little one learnt to roll on her front she would also wake or get upset because she couldn't roll back so I rolled up two large bath towels and put either side of her cot with another sheet over the top for comfort and safety, that seemed to do the trick. We have a video sleep monitor and would observe her trying to roll onto her front whilst asleep but just kind of rolled back again! She'd try a couple times but then gave up and fell asleep where she was in the first place. I'd also like to add that 2-3 weeks later she's now learnt to roll back again and now we watch her get herself into all sorts of fun positions while she sleeps!
