WHAT is up with my 11wo?? And what shall I do about it?

DS2 is 11 weeks now, and he's all over the place with his sleeping and eating.

A few weeks ago he stopped napping for longer than about 30-40 minutes in the day, so ended up having 4-5 short naps every day. Night sleep was pretty good, we'd dream feed 10-11pm, he'd wake around 3am and then back until 6.30-7ish. But I was all panicky and upset about daytime sleep and sure he wasn't getting enough.

Since Tuesday last week, he's begun to nap well again, 2-2.5hour naps in the middle of the day, plus an hour 8.30am and another at some point in the afternoon. But his night time sleep has turned to shit! He's begun waking at 1am, 3am, 5am but isn't hungry, just wide awake. We've had a couple of mornings when he hasn't fed until 5.30am, or even 6.30am yesterday, so he went about 8 hours between feeds. But it makes not difference when he's wide awake at 3am!

I just don't know what to do. He's noisy when he wakes, and is in with us which wakes us, but also DS1 is in the next room and quite a light sleeper, especially from 5am, so I really don't want him waking up. I end up giving DS2 a dummy or bringing him in with us just to quiet him.

I'm so tired from this past week of increased night wakings. I know there's a growth spurt around 12 weeks (and DS2 was born 15 days late so I wouldn't be surprised if this is it now) but does this turn the sleep bad? He's definitely feeding more (he's ff, and finishing his bottles now whereas previously he'd leave a couple of oz).

How can I stop this waking if he's not hungry? Toying with giving him a bottle of water, or perhaps a watered down formula (this is what worked with DS1 stopping his night feeds but he was 8 months! But definitely waking out of habit rather than hunger).

Should I be waking DS2 from his new-found napathons if it's affecting his night sleep?

Someone please tell me what to do!

just came across your post so bumping it as it has slipped down the page without a reply.

11wo is still very tiny and i would think too young to give water.

hopefully this phase will pass for you, my DS seemed to change his pattern of sleep every week or 2 at first!

sorry no helpful advice, hope you get on ok.

Just replied to another similar thread about sudden night waking - same thing was happening to the babies in one of the mum & baby groups I go to and turns out it was just because it's got cold. Turning the heating on low has had great results for a few of us - might be worth a go if you think your baby could be cold.

How do you know he's not hungry? Have you tried to give him a feed in the night? Seems like the most likely reason at that age, his tummy is still really tiny.
