My 12 week old Son's Sleep Pattern - Opinions Please!

As a first-time mum, I once again bow down to the greater wisdom that is Mumsnet...

Here's the pattern:

Wakes at 7/8am
Snooze for 1/2 hour at about 10
Awake
Snooze for 1 hour at about 12
Awake
Falls asleep in pram / snooze at about 3 (approx 1 hour)
Awake
Randomly falls asleep at about 6pm for approx 1/2 hour
Awake (colicky)
Bath sometime between 8 and 9pm
Falls asleep between 9-10pm and will sleep through until 3am
wakes to feed (10 mins)
Sleeps until 5am
wakes to feed (10 mins)
Sleeps until 7/8am

What I would really like is to have two longer naps in the day... I'm not too worried about the nights as he is still so little and I'm getting pretty good chunks of sleep myself. But how to do it? There's so much conflicting advice, I would love to hear what has worked for you. IT's worth mentioning at this point that I don't go in for the tough love approach at all.

Thanks in advance! Smile

I think 3 naps or even 4 is more 'normal' at this age and it actually all sounds pretty good. The only thing that worked for us with DS was to be walking and walking with the pram to keep him asleep at this age, if you want to ensure a longer nap.

Ditto! My DD was sleeping for around 40 mins after an hour awake, so would sometimes have 5 naps during the day and woke frequently at night for feeding/resettling.

I wouldn't worry too much about nap duration at this stage - just put him down when he's tired and he'll sleep for as long as he needs to. The pattern will change and the naps become less frequent as he gets older

(I'd love to say they'll definitely get longer, but after a halcyon couple of weeks of long naps with my DD, we can only get her to sleep for longer than half an hour at a time without resettling if she's in the moving pram - she's now 8.5mo...)

Thanks ladies. Glad to hear this isn't unusual! I think more than anything I feel like I should have more of a routine by now (though what I've described is a routine in itself, I suppose)... but that's more down to the so-called "sleep gurus" and their (oft conflicting!) advice. Like I say, I'm getting enough sleep myself so I really don't have anything to complain about - I just tend to worry that I'm not doing things 'right' somehow!
