Resisting sleep all of a sudden

My 16 month old DS has slept well since he was about 7 months old. He's always been put down for his naps and at bed time awake and has generally gone to sleep no problems.

Until about 2 weeks ago. Now as soon as I leave the room he jumps up and stands in his cot nattering or crying. I go back in, lie him down and leave. Up he jumps again. Usually this happens until I pick him up and he falls asleep on me, then I put him in his cot.

Same thing's been happening at night. He's waking once/twice/3 times and is sometimes a nightmare to get back down.

I'm really impatient and hate waiting for him to fall asleep on me while I sit in a dark room and can't even read or anything. I should probably appreciate the quality cuddle, but I just get frustrated and then feel bad.

I thought I'd seen the back of these days. Me and DP were hoping it was just a phase, but it seems to be persisting and I'm unsure what to do.

Any ideas?
