As title really, can anyone recommend a really good resort for Xmas? Somewhere that has the Xmas vibe, and things to do off the slopes.
we have done Alpe D’Huez, Seefeld and Borovets.
I am looking at Les Gets but not sure how snow sure it would be at Xmas. thank you :)

Cervinia

Zermatt.

Obergurgl - been there twice at Christmas. Much smaller than Cervinia, both enjoyable.

We always go to the southern French alps at Xmas / new year and have always had snow. Granted some years are better than others but Vars and Montgenevre would be my top recommends.

Zermatt. Plus it’s easy to get to by train.

We’ve done Val d’Isere 3 years running the week before Christmas and it’s been consistently decent. Neighbouring Tignes would also give you the same skiable domaine but with cheaper accommodation options. Both are big with plenty of non skiing stuff to do.

I'm surprised at Zermatt, very lovely tho

Surprised how?

Les Gets is a bit risky at Christmas in my view - loads of snow last year but it’s relatively low for the French Alps so they can and do have poor years (eg so little snow for Christmas 2022 that they reopened the mountain bike tracks). I’d also suggest Val d’Isere or neighbouring Tignes, also Val Thorens.

Sainte Foy - near Val D'Isere and Tignes, small family resort and pretty snow sure. They put on a lot of Christmas related activities for kids; we've been the last two years and there's been snow both years.

What level of skiiers are you? Large, extensive resort with the ability to ski over the border, or a smaller, intimate one?

For snow sure alone I was also thinking Zermatt or Cervinia. Another option is Livigno. Its a long transfer, but you can often ski into April. I know its been in the news for the olympics, but we went 3yrs in a row. Being so remote, its remained tax free, so you can get all manner of duty free items- alcohol, food, electronics etc. I'm not sure how the new rules with brexit affect this though. St Moritz is only 1hr away, so a great option for a day there too.

Les Gets was bare this year at Christmas- everyone was driving up to Avoriaz.

Saas Fee is another good option and is a beautiful village with good restaurants, although it's not overly challenging so depends what sort of level you're skiing at.

Justbloodydoit · 04/04/2026 09:33

I love Saas Fee, I think the skiing is a great intermediate level. Not much beginner, not many blacks.

LIZS · 04/04/2026 09:45

Seefeld and Borovets won’t be. You need access to a glacier eg. Kaprun/Zell am see, Tignes, Obertauern, Saas Fee, Solden
