Not good for ski resorts

So gutted to hear of so many closing down for the season tomorrow. I know it's probably the right decision and know we're lucky to have been before all of this. I hope that companies do not go bankrupt as a result of it.

Yes I can see smaller hotels and lift companies going out of business.

We didn't go in Feb and my kids are now gutted that our Easter trip to Austria has been cancelled. They're begging me to find somewhere else to take them but I think there is nowhere that will be open.

My heart goes out to the small businesses affected, what a nightmare for them. But at least the virus didn't hit earlier in the season so hopefully most of them will pull through.

Nanalisa60 · 13/03/2020 18:13

I was booked to be in a chalet in the Dolomites this week with 26 good friends it was cancelled last Friday afternoon, so I booked to go to Austria on Monday for this Saturday 😢 it was cancelled this morning.

I’m giving up now!! Luckily I was in France in January.

Vargas · 13/03/2020 19:27

It looks like France is keeping ski resorts open, but not sure it's such a good idea to travel there (for them or us)....I will wait and see.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 13/03/2020 19:29

It’s heartbreaking for all involved. Tourism is so important to these areas.
I really hope they can all hang in there so we can go spending our money next year.

drspouse · 13/03/2020 19:32

We were due to go to Norway and the resort is closed. We're waiting for the flights to all be cancelled to get that back.

DH is taking DS to the indoor ski place to get him used to the idea and they will still go as he has booked! But I am pushing for us to book for early in the season, in school term, next year. Both DCs have excellent attendance and we don't think they will miss anything (will be Y4 and Y2).

Andorra closing today so our much awaited family easter holiday cancelled. Finding it very upsetting. Trying to focus on finding something else to do at easter, but skiing is so easy as the kids are simply too tired to fight with each other. Can't deal with the thought of being cooped in a holiday cottage with rowing kids...

ReallyRatherNerdy · 14/03/2020 10:15

Also feeling so sorry for all the ski instructors at the lovely ski school. The loss of income for them and the small businesses that employ them will be a real blow.

NCTDN · 14/03/2020 11:49

@ReallyRatherNerdy the ski instructors there were so lovely as well.

I've been thinking about the ski school we used today. And how gutted I am for them. I looked at the webcams for the resort in Austria that we were at in February and it was eerie. The lifts were still running but I counted one person walking with a snowboard across the bottom of the nursery slope, and two people doing a blue run. Another gondola is the top of a very popular blue. Always busy whenever I've looked at the webcam, and when I was there in person. Today, completely deserted. No-one getting off the lift or skiing down.
Three people over the whole mountain. Awful to see.

We arrived in la plagne in France yesterday - staying with in laws as they have apartment but also booked out apartment next door to give us and toddler DD more space. Bought ski passes last night as last we’d heard they were staying open, but now closing today 😭

Also they seem to be encouraging tourists to go home, but there are no flights back to our regional airport sooner than the one we are booked on next Sat so not sure what to do - worried we will be kicked out!

So gutted - we really needed the break while MIL looked after DD but now we are all going to be cooped up together all day for a week.

drspouse · 15/03/2020 13:14

Can you go for lonely snow hikes while MIL still babysits?

TeetotalKoala · 15/03/2020 13:19

Look at this. Empty. 8/10 lifts still running. Nobody in them. Great conditions too.

LIZS · 15/03/2020 13:26

Austria has banned gatherings of 5 or more. Most resorts have closed lifts down and hotels emptying. Locals tend not to ski in March anyway and tourists can no longer visit.

GiantKitten · 15/03/2020 13:34

Bulgaria claims to be ok currently...
(DS has been & said it’s ok, & of course much cheaper than the Alps.)

GiantKitten · 15/03/2020 13:35

Oh - comments there seem to contradict that Confused

It is a shame

Youhedge · 17/03/2020 22:06

@camelsandcaramel what took you there. Sounds interesting!

camelsandcaramel · 18/03/2020 01:14

We’ve been twice now, it’s great! Ultimately it’s because of the value for money, it’s unbelievable! Ski passes for 4 of us for the week is the same as 1 person per day in France / Switzerland / Austria!! Ski hire (all brand new) for 4 people for the week £80, food and wine cheap as chips, family accommodation in a 4 star ski in / out £500

We love skiing Europe but as you get so much for your money, it leaves more in the pot for other holidays. Check it out. A couple of nights in Tbilisi (the capital) is always fun too!

Youhedge · 18/03/2020 07:07

@camelsandcaramel what’s the name of the one you went to? Thanks

camelsandcaramel · 18/03/2020 07:41

We stay in a resort called Guduari. There’s loads of hotels, we stay in the Gudauri Loft

Youhedge · 18/03/2020 11:09

Looks fab. Thanks

zsazsajuju · 18/03/2020 11:15

Thanks Camels - will def consider for next year
