A unique user is one person - so 100,000 different people come to the site every month. This is different than how many times the site is accessed each month (about 4 million times)

I think a unique user is someone who has not been before...in a certain time frame...rather than the same person coming back again and again...

And I just looked at the subscriptions page and only 284 people (if this is a correct figure) have paid any subscription in the past year! Shocking.
