grr - this DOES sound annoying. I will find out what's goin' on.
OliviaMumsnet · 17/05/2010 22:29
Double grr Sorry about this - I'm not having any probs. Will shout for techs
YetMoreTech · 17/05/2010 22:37
Fine for me at the moment.
Does it come up eventually or do you get a timeout error message in your browser?
YetMoreTech · 17/05/2010 23:03
KickArse, I'm not going anywhere, but as I said, it's fine for me. When it does finally come up, are there particular ads you're seeing? And does it happen on particular topics or pages?
YetMoreTech · 17/05/2010 23:06
Chances are it is an issue with an ad, but we serve lots so it's hard to pin it down. However, because different ads are targeted to different parts of the site, if we know which part has the problems we can narrow down which ad it might be.
YetMoreTech · 17/05/2010 23:34
Thanks DEM. The problem you're having is that the web page itself is loading, but the style sheet (sorry - dunno if you're of a technical bent or not; if not, the style sheet is the bit that tells your browser how all the text is meant to look) isn't. Hence you're not getting the right layout, the right fonts etc. It implies a flakey connection. There is definitely nothing wrong at the server end. And that particular problem is unrelated to ads. Sorry not to have any more useful info for you.
YetMoreTech · 17/05/2010 23:35
KickArseQueen, I believe that (i.e. difference depending how you logged in) is just coincidence I'm afraid.
YetMoreTech · 17/05/2010 23:46
DEM, next time you get a timeout please make a note of the precise time and email a screenshot to tech at mumsnet.
Howdy boys!
YetMoreTech · 17/05/2010 23:52
DEM - what normally happens is your browser requests the page, parses the code therein, sees that it links to a style sheet and then it requests said style sheet. They cannot happen truly concurrently, because your browser wouldn't know it needs the style sheet until after its downloaded the page. There is a mechanism within your browser which will try to reuse the existing connection to do the subsequent downloads.
For any one of a number of reasons, including the server being too busy, the connection between your browser and the server being flakey, etc. etc. it can sometimes occur that the first of these downloads (i.e. the page itself) goes okay, but the second (the download of the style sheet) does not.
HelenMumsnet · 18/05/2010 20:46
Oh no - is it?
Is it for anyone else?
