Twitter and Facebook links

We've added little buttons next to each post which means you can easily post things up on Twitter and Facebook. Please don't feel you have to - we're just making it a bit easier for those who feel the urge.
Best,
MNHQ

(ps have you voted in our final election poll yet If not please please do as we want to close it in the next couple of hours - txs)

I won't be using them but don't mind them being there.

But they look all messy. Can you tidy them up please?

BertieBotts · 30/04/2010 13:05

Hmm. One of the things I like about mumsnet is the lack of things like this So not an improvement IMO. And I do use facebook, but if I really wanted to share a thread it's not hard to copy the link from the address bar. It didn't need dumbing down.

Uriel · 30/04/2010 13:08

Could there be an option to hide the new links?

Ponders · 30/04/2010 13:08

somebody from MN posted on FB recently that some public figure "for example, is a twat" & a RL friend naturally wanted to know why "for example" was there

merging RL & MN via FB could lead to disaster

Me and many others have written personal stuff on here that is peculiar only to our personal lives.

Easily traceable now I feel. OK I know mn is a public forum blah blah but not as public as Facebook and Twitter.

I would like every thread I ever started to be deleted actually.

Spatchadoodledo · 30/04/2010 13:53

I would like every thread I ever started to be deleted actually.

Can you do that? Can you request for your whole profile and history to be deleted? And then reregister!!

Monty100 · 30/04/2010 13:56

Spatch, don't know, perhaps Justine will answer it for us.

hobnob57 · 30/04/2010 13:57

Hmmm, I'm thinking alond the same lines as Monty

justallovertheplace · 30/04/2010 14:03

Not a fan I have to say

Sabs1981 · 30/04/2010 14:07

I'm not too sure about it either. Like to keep my MN life and RL separate

aristocat · 30/04/2010 14:07

dont like them sorry

Makes me want to go and hide. I don't use Twitter but as I understand it, like Facebook you use your real name. On MN we hide behind a fake ID and post about things we wouldn't otherwise talk about. I have talked about my nipples, lovely bunches of vulvic varicose veins and sex on here, I have no desire for that to end up linked to my FB where people know my name at all.

Monty100 · 30/04/2010 14:31

Pitch - me neither. I'll never post personal stuff, or voice certain personal opinions on here again.

So the question for Justine is, can I have all the threads I ever started deleted??

Monty100 · 30/04/2010 14:33

Indith, exactly Twitter and Facebook use real life names whereas MN doesn't.

Tee2072 · 30/04/2010 14:57

Um, y'all obviously don't realize that MN HQ has been posting threads to FB and Twitter for nearly a year now. Also? MN is not private. Search for almost any children issue via almost any search engine and MN is nearly always first link to click.

Chill, people. And come into the idea that you may think you are hidden behind your screen names, but you really aren't.

Don't want people to know who you are? Don't ever ever ever post anything anywhere on the 'net. Because even if you get MNHQ to delete everything you've ever done? Its not really gone. There are ways to get to it.

My one suggestion, MNHQ: can you rewrite the Twitter one so that it shortens the URL automatically? There are usually too many characters for a Tweet.

Indith · 30/04/2010 15:01

On slightly more rational thought of course if a random person posts a link and a friend of mine happens to read it there will be no link between my post on the thread and my FB unless I link it. I'm just afraid of change. I'll just go and sit down in front of the Antiques Roadshow with a nice cup of tea.

I still don't like the buttons though, the eye is drawn to them which is really distracting since they are on every post.

ditto Pitchounette, lapin

No ta.

BeenBeta · 30/04/2010 15:37

Can someone explain in simple terms what would actually happen if I clicked on those buttons.

Its just that I am old enough to remember really very clearly what the world was like before personal computers were invented. I suggest you start your explanation with the words:

"Facebook, twitter and text messaging are really useful because..... "

Pulls up chair next to BeenBeta and waits politely...

Monty100 · 30/04/2010 16:06

Littlealpin - I suppose there's one way round it then, don't start a thread, and/or consider every word you say when posting.

nappyzoneloveslindor · 30/04/2010 16:16

I dont like it - mnet is my dirty little secret and i despise facebook so there
