"Locking" threads........any chance?

is there any chance that something like this could be brought in - for use on threads which we want to 'end' - but don't actually need deleting???

I know there has on occassion been posts by mod's on various threads saying "can we just leave this now" type thing - and of course naturally people 'still' post on it (especially if they're new to the thread and haven't seen the 'don't post anymore' message as they read through it).

Sometimes 'deleting' isn't really approriate (think that should only happen in the very extreme cases - but a "thread locked" thing would be good - so people can read it, but not post on it??

Agree with SoupDragon about the clear difference. On the site my dh runs there is a thread locking system but it is used EXTREMELY rarely. Heated debate is never discouraged (just as well really, lol..) but ad hominen attacks are usually stomped on fairly fast, especially if they get completely out of hand. As a result, the quality of debate has improved (well okay, mostly), simply because people have worked out they're not going to get away with attacking the person not the argument...

Personally, I think the mods are generally pretty impartial when it comes to leaping in with a Mod hat on. I'm sure Lou has threatened to mod herself before.

I think some who weren't around on Friday with puma miss the point that the initial thread was started by another mn not T and when it was trolled the op asked for it to be deleted which promptly happened, then the troll went mad on a series of threads so that is maybe a similar situation to a thread lock if someone is determined to insult which troll was, the problem in that case was a troll not a thread...

Also bear in mind that threads would be flagged and be able to be unlocked as soon as tech or whoever were available again and disagreed with the ruling. If a mod was abusing the power, they could fairly quickly be removed of that power.

katierocket · 04/07/2005 14:08

LOL at the thought of mods abusing their power. I can just see Lou now, stomping around with her cane, wildly locking threads "I'M in CHARGE, don't you know, ME, ME, I RULE THE WORLD, HA, HA, HA, HA...."

or maybe not

Gomez · 04/07/2005 14:09

No but I can see Enid doing that katie .

RTKangaMummy · 04/07/2005 14:10

But puma went from one to another didn't it ???

So would therefore cause all threads to be HALTED/LOCKED that they infected

And because of that

we would give more power to trolls wouldn't we?

GeorginaA · 04/07/2005 14:12

RTKM - it's not going to be a cure all... just another in the arsenal. No, it wouldn't be effective with trolls jumping around threads - you'd still need swift tech response for that.

katierocket · 04/07/2005 14:13

I didn't even know Enid was a mod. Cripes, now I am scared...

Gomez · 04/07/2005 14:17

Relax Katie she is not - but it was suggested earlier that she would apply if additional powers were made available.

Deep breaths now

katierocket · 04/07/2005 14:19

phew

Enid · 04/07/2005 14:52

I so want to be a mod

and if they get the power to lock/delete threads I am definitely applying

so be warned

and make the most of 'Only Joking' while it lasts

he he he he

katierocket · 04/07/2005 14:58

aaaaarrgghhhh

Cam · 04/07/2005 15:07

Someone who wants to be a mod that much definitely can't be allowed to be one, so just to be on the safe side, can mumsnet ban Enid

katierocket · 04/07/2005 15:08

yes I think that would be best for all concerned

lou33 · 04/07/2005 16:41

dunno about locking threads, but being able to delete the really offensive posts would be handy sometimes.
