What is the MN etiquette on asking someone if they could change their name as it is too similar to yours ?

is there an etiquette to ask a new poster (or perhaps recent namechanger) to consider changing their name or do you have to lump it and change yours , which I really dont want to do .

I did make a comment on a thread they were on but they dont seem to have picked up on it .

Thanks

ah see this doesn't happen to me as I change my name rather alot

or

Heifer asked me to change my name when I first joined because I was just plain Heffa. I didn't mind at all but she was happy with me adding to the name rather than changing it completely. Heffa has been my username on quite a few internet communities so I didn't choose it because I couldn't have Heifer or because I was trying to copy someone else - it's just the internet handle I prefer. I didn't even realise there was a Heifer until she started the thread.

I think it is reasonable to ask politely (sounds like you're being very polite) but I do think it's reasonable of the other person to refuse if they are particularly attached to the name which they might be even if they are a new user.
