Search: please help the Techs fix it

Hello.

We know that Advanced Search is currently up the creek not functioning at its optimum level, and the Techs are busy trying to fix it.

But we need your help in making sure we've got a handle on all the things that don't work with it right now.

Many of you have already yelled about told us what's not working for you and we think this is where we're at:

1. Choose Topics ain't working at all.

1. If you search using Classic, every individual post in each thread comes up separately under its thread title, rather than being grouped together.

1. If you're using Classic, you can't click through to the individual posts that your search has brought up. You get taken to the OP instead.

1. Some people are getting taken to the Talk Topic page when they click on a thread they've searched for.

Is there anything we've missed?

Threads I'm on is fine, threads I'm watching - if I click on a post, rather than the title, it takes me to topics list. MN New, firefox.

No 2 on that list is VERY annoying!

Seriously, all luck to you in resolving the problem - I'm so glad I don't do this anymore!!!! But you might want to look at how the results are being populated - if you search the same term at different times of the day you seem to get different results and definitely number of results. Now yes there are new posts which would account for it if the numbers were increasing but they don't always increase So either your database is randomly deleting stuff (arrgh) or the search is a bit umm fucked under pressure overstretched.

Incidentally don't bother trying to fix that - it may well resolve spontaneously once the other bits of search are fixed.

Hello thumbwitch, Solo, JustAnotherManicMummy and MrCSWS: yes, we do know about Threads I'm On - promise! And we are working on fixing that too.

And Doodlez: Yes, there is more than one Tech, though not often all in the Shed at once.

There is NikitaTech, who does scary things with Java; BigTech, who messed up search released a new code and then ran off to Brazil decided to go on holiday; YetMoreTech, who types very loudly and at supersonic speed on his keyboard, and of course the original Tech, who has a kind of Transcontinental Shed in the States.

You have to give it time to index the words Juillet .

The Techs are hard at it but it does seem to be a bit of a complicated fix - well, that's the story they're spinning

Hope we can bring you some good Search news soon.

I just wanted to quickly say that 4 is happening when I search keywords in titles only, but not when I search titles and messages (ie the top option) - am on New.

My threads Im on has now become a list of all the thread titles but no indication of recent posts or who posted last

Search is not fixed! Trying to click on a result just takes me back to the talk page still.

No, not working here either. If I click on a search result it goes to the topics page.

I think we need a new way of reporting problems publically because site stuff is a discussion page like any other and there are so many threads popping up with problems reported and what we really want is to know that MNHQ are hearing us. Some of it obviously gets lost in amongst the 'how do I namechange', 'how do I lose pages' etc chat. I know you have a contactus email but I don't want a private dialogue with you because others need to explain better/point out things I've missed/confirm problems. Could you have a site problems or tech page with a header for saying that it's stuff for the attention of MNHQ specifically?

I hardly dare say it but mine does seem to be fixed:- Advanced search will bring up the poster's post and not the page, threads I'm on the same and the Waving children have gone Hallelujah

A bit of playing reveals that my problem with advanced search is when I change the search to 'thread titles only'. I always search this way to narrow down results. Searching thread and title works, but title only doesn't. Thread and title brings up a million results though.

Any idea when this will be fixed? it is a nightmare having to look through each topic individually. I miss search
