Hidden space - a hole in the MN time/space continuum?

BecauseImWorthIt · 05/11/2009 21:50

I have noticed that in long
posts, suddenly there appears a rogue space.

Is this a secret door into the wonderful world of MNHQ, or something more mundane to do with the arcane world of coding?

Look:

Hoping it's worked ....

@nannynick, finally someone to talk binary to, except CRLF would be 00001101 00001010, I see what you did though, you split the two bytes into four half bytes and then interpreted each digit into each half byte. What you've said would be hex 8, hex 11 which is backspace and a "vertical tab".

nannynick · 06/11/2009 23:45

Trust me to get it wrong.

Or in our language:
01010100011100100111010101110011011101000010000001101101011001010010000001110100
0110111 1001000000110011101100101011101000010000001101001011101000010000001110111
0111001001101111011011100 110011100101110
(without any CR/LF the browser decides to display in that binary sequence)

nannynick · 06/11/2009 23:48

For those wondering, I used ASCII to Binary / Binary to ASCII on TheSkull.com to translate the phrase to binary.

VulpusinaWilfsuit · 06/11/2009 23:49

Fuck me. It is like a Bloke Nerd Breeding Sanctuary now.

"Finally, someone to talk binary to..." has to go on your tombstone I feel.

EinsteinBentLight · 07/11/2009 00:32

which bit? the 1 0 bit is use of a translator and google to find it. have a nice one so hex is within grasp. makes me smile when a i use it to annoy someone.

The spaces bit - yep collectively we could conquerthe world if we put our minds to it.

But, but - when I try to convert your binary it won't let me - it tells me that it's not even or that there's an additional character or a separator?

So the hole has also crept into the binary code, hasn't it?

See - it's spreading!

BTW - I'm going to vote bastian for QOTW with "finally someone to talk binary to"!

OP posts:
nannynick · 07/11/2009 16:23

BIWI - It's the spaces it doesn't like, so won't convert.

It's not spreading... the hole has always been in the binary code, computers only really deal with 1's and 0's. They just appear more intelligent!

ABetaDad · 07/11/2009 16:25

This reminds me of 2001 Space Odyssey and the HAL 9000 computer called 'Hal'. We only know Hal is doing stuff in the background and is malevolent because Hal never normally makes mistakes. I have had my suspicions about MNHQ server for some time. Look at the sudden appearance of red lettering in the Web Chat yesterday, look at all the other funny goings on throughout this week. Its got a mind of its own I tell you. It all fits.

BigTech - do not go in the airlock!

BecauseImWorthIt · 07/11/2009 16:27

I think it's too late, ABetaDad. We haven't heard from him since he went to check.

I think he probably went through the door and ignored the warnings - you know, when it's all a bit too quiet, but then the creepy music starts in the background ...

OP posts:
nannynick · 07/11/2009 16:29

MNServer to BigTech: I think you know what the problem is just as well as I do. I know that you and CatherineMumsnet were planning to disconnect me, and I'm afraid that's something I cannot allow to happen.

ABetaDad · 07/11/2009 16:33
