Idea for Thread Title Lists (naming who started them)

hub2dee · 11/06/2005 09:26

In Active Convos, for example, you see long lists of thread titles. Sometimes I think it would be useful to see who created them before I have a look. (We can currently only see who the last poster was).

Does anyone think it would be useful to have the name of the person who started the thread in brackets next to it, or would it be cliquey / irrelevant / annoying ?

For example:

Topic Area: Thread Title (Name of Thread Creator) - Number of posts. Last poster, Time and Date Stamp.

I'd be interested in any comments.

H2D - if you go a long time between visits the list of posts will look daunting when you use that search.
It really isn't too bad though because you can skim down the page quite quickly seeing who has posted and you can see the first line or so of each post as well.
If you open any individual threads in a new window so that you keep the search results intact IYSWIM, when you have finished reviewing the results you can just hit F5 to refresh the whole search. Unless the site is really busy you will have a much smaller result and it is all active posting.
Best search page on the site IMO.

another slant (not a very nice one admittedly but still). there are some people here who have been very down for a while and some people avoid their threads as they think it might be another depressing one. (i know, i know, its bad but it goes on, i dont do this personally but ive seen it discussed). they could start to be on the up and do a great thread but still be avoided, thats not going to be much help to them..if that makes any sense?

hub2dee · 11/06/2005 13:30

No, I understand nightowl. Another valid point.

Hmmm... is this turning out to be a crap idea ?

OP posts:
collision · 11/06/2005 13:34

Yep! Crap idea Hub!

hub2dee · 11/06/2005 13:36

Although a few thought it was a good idea so there may be something in it.

he he. i want a worried emoticon but no-body will give it me. you know a "im-posting-this-but-you-may-all-hate-me" type one.

Newbarnsleygirl · 11/06/2005 13:42

I don't like the idea of that.
Regulars and oldies () will automaticly go staight to the threads of those names they know well which wouldn't be good for newbies and it would make MN an unwelcoming place.

Usually the thread title says it all so you would know from reading it wether you want to participate in it or not.

sadbuttrue · 11/06/2005 14:34

If I start a thread, I often post on it twice so that other people think someone else started it.

I'm a regular but not an "oldie" or popular and think your idea is complete tosh and would put others like me at a disadvantage.

sadbuttrue · 11/06/2005 14:35

And, yes, I changed my name for that one.

suzywong · 11/06/2005 14:36

agree with lemonice's earliest post, I remember the days of pot luck and no names on thread titles....

hub2dee · 11/06/2005 14:52

LOL@suzy.

sadbuttrue - I am sorry you think my idea is "complete tosh." I trust all your ideas are "utterly incredible."

OP posts:
sadbuttrue · 11/06/2005 15:09

So, 'cliquey', 'poor show' and 'crap' are all right then but my comment warranted extra sarcasm?

Say no more...

SOUPerciliousDragon · 11/06/2005 15:27

jeez sadbuttrue I really think that's in your perception and not what hub said .. he has been equally 'sarcastic' if that is how you perceive it to everyone else who posted

(twiglett here can't be bothered to change back atm)

hub2dee · 11/06/2005 15:27

sadbuttrue - I think it was the combination of a namechange with a phrase that sounded somewhat aggressive IMHO. With a namechange, you have no particular idea of the personality behind the name as you've never read any of their posts IYSWIM.

I never said this idea was fantastic. Infact my post asked if it might be useful or cliquey, so perhaps you would have got a different reaction if you'd have posted under your ordinary name or commented on the idea in a different way ?

OP posts:
hub2dee · 11/06/2005 15:31

Nice X post, hub, nice x post.

OP posts:
roisin · 11/06/2005 15:38

Well I still guiltily admit I would like this idea. But I agree with the posts here that it might not necessarily make mn a better place.

sadbuttrue · 11/06/2005 15:44

I put tosh instead of crap or rubbish as thought it wasn't as harsh IMHO.

Simply put your idea is cliquey.

hub2dee · 11/06/2005 15:49

Hi sadbuttrue - to me it sounded more derogatory, but I appreciate your post and explanation, and in a world without body language, I'll take the smiley, and raise you one.

OP posts:
hunkermunker · 11/06/2005 16:51

Apologies if this has been suggested, but how about an option to search for "threads started by x" rather than just "posts made by x on any thread"?

Haven't read the whole thread - had wondered about Hub's idea myself the other day, but only idly - I quite like guessing who's started threads (and have to say, I sometimes groan inwardly when I see who did and leave hurriedly, but I'm v cliquey, so my views don't count ).

Twiglett · 11/06/2005 16:55

oo sneaky that deserves a snurk

hunkermunker · 11/06/2005 16:56

Why thank you, Madam Marmite

MadamMarmite · 11/06/2005 16:56

And before you snaffle it...

hunkermunker · 11/06/2005 16:57

Sneaky, aren't I?

Sneaky · 11/06/2005 16:59

not so much

hunkermunker · 11/06/2005 16:59

Eek!

Dammit...
