Can we have a end/close discussion option

Ok, have been wondering about this and suspect that there might be support for this. Can we have a option to stop more posts being added - eg to very old threads or threads that have served their purpose and no longer required but still be required for reference?

Plus when did view profile become contact poster? did i miss something?

dont fancy a simpering sanitised MN,were nothing contentious is said and posts are frothy

claireybee · 14/07/2009 16:00

Against. It would just lead to a million threads all about the same thing where people haven't had their say on the original so start a spin off thread to make their point.

AitchTwoOh · 14/07/2009 16:01

a while back some people used to do

__

which used to piss me right off.

i second UQD's icon idea, though, that would be most useful.

Could we have closing credits?

AitchTwoOh · 14/07/2009 16:08

lol.

AitchTwoOh · 14/07/2009 16:08

FIN

scottishmummy · 14/07/2009 16:10

do the usual humphy faces and name calling not suffice anymore?

i was once on a thread were someone put a shout out to her MN mates to come back her up.that did make me laugh.

maybe we could have virtual fighting and hair pulling.

PinkTulips · 14/07/2009 16:22

a 'thumping my head against a brick wall' emoticon and an eye rolling emoticon would be quite useful though

UnquietDad · 14/07/2009 16:26

PinkTulips: I tend to use this and this !

One other forum I post on does have an eye-roller "smiley" - very useful! They don't have old sceptical-face though I love him

RustyBear · 14/07/2009 16:48

I think this one could be useful....

JeMeSouviens · 14/07/2009 16:55

I could just post a comment, I always kill threads.

End.

this v relevant

JeMeSouviens · 14/07/2009 17:02

I said END

Bleatblurt · 14/07/2009 17:05

What I would like is if MNHQ just locked threads rather than deleting them.

Then those of us that had missed the fun could catch up but no-one could post on it.

AND people couldn't deny some of the shite they come out with if it was just locked rather than deleted.

UnquietDad · 14/07/2009 17:07

I know a forum which temporarily locks heated threads which have gone off the point or descended into name-calling.

Permanent locking would just result in people starting up copycat threads, surely?

Bleatblurt · 14/07/2009 17:09

But they do that anyway, UnquietDad! Deleting doesn't stop it happening, it just stops everyone who wasn't around wondering what the puff everyone is wittering on about. So then you get 10 threads asking what is going on.

PinkTulips · 14/07/2009 17:59

Besides, even deleting the thread doesn't always make it disappear into the ether... most of the time those posting on it can use back to get to the last pages and often people will have copied if they sensed things were in danger of being shut down.

Like butterball suggests, it would be nice if threads were simply locked so they could still be read... sometimes threads start off with lots of useful advice on an unusual topic and simply decend into nonsense later on, would be good if they were still in the archives and the good advice wasn't lost.

AitchTwoOh · 14/07/2009 18:44

lol at 'sensed it was in danger of being shut down'. have you been watching torchwood?

agree that locking rather than removing is better. let people be hoist on their own stupid petard i say.

DidEinsteinsMum · 14/07/2009 18:46

Butterball - i think that that was what i meant. Not deleting, not removing but a button where we could request maybe the "add your message here" bit be removed and only for us to requeset like the request for thread deletion then it could be up to the souls at MNHQ to decide whether it was a fair request. I can see the posibility for abuse and dont think it should be a general do self function but think it could be valuable especially for those threads heading towards asbusive but contain some very useful valuable points. It might be possible for the request posting stop to turn into request thread reactivation button? Would that be soothing to those i seem to have upset with this suggestion.

I didn't see the wall of contriversy this thread hit coming and thought it a simple request. Sorry.

I think a "whatever" emoticon would be good too.

I used to HATE that line thing.
