Michael Jackson moderation

RachelMumsnet · 26/06/2009 12:10

Hi there
As you can imagine we've had a few complaints this morning about some of the comments and allegations made against MJ. Our policy normally is not to delete posts on the grounds of distaste as what is distasteful to one is another person's idea of humour, however in this situation, given that someone has just died, we're finding it hard to just leave things. So we thought we'd ask you. Do you think comments such as 'I hope he burns' and the onslaught of MJ jokes should be deleted or left in the name of free speech? Let us know your thoughts.
Thanks
MNHQ

Oh morningsun I agree! I wasn't for one minute suggesting they should be deleted. I just think their comments are ridiculously poitless.

As I said in my earlier post, I'm for no deletion.

Itsjustafleshwound · 26/06/2009 16:26

I would just like to know how this moderation is going to take place - we already have a situation where there is a delay between the reporting and deletion of threads (especially over weekends) without having to weed out every miserable or libellous comment being investigated...

I am all for self moderation ...

MagicMountain · 26/06/2009 16:28

Don't censor if you can avoid it (law suits etc).

JustineMumsnet · 26/06/2009 16:29

Ok so we'll go to one thead, here but we'll keep the one in music and this one (so folks can refer to the discussion), but unsticky it.

Everything else we'll delete along with reported posts that are so nasty they make us choke on our Froot Shoots.

Thanks one and all for the input.

piscesmoon · 26/06/2009 16:32

I'm not sure where I stand; I believe in free speech, but that sort of thread seems to bring out the worst in some people. I have glanced at a few comments but I avoid reading them properly because I find it all rather sickening-it reminds me how vile human nature can be. Probably it should stay, and be ignored by the majority.

PeachyTheRiverParrettHarlot · 26/06/2009 16:37

Can you get rid of the to think sometimes mumsnet scks MJ one fiorst pelase?

I don't get all the out pouring of grief for a man that we never actually knew! - Freaky in a Princess Di sense.

And I don't get how anyone can blame the weirdness of his relationships with kids on his childhood - the fact of the matter when it comes to his leanings is that he would have been locked away years ago if he was not a 'Superstar'!

I hope my father burns in hell and he isn't even dead yet so I don't think typing such things on the net are a huge big deal either, especially about someone you didnlt know and if it offends you don't read it.

whomovedmychocolate · 26/06/2009 16:47

Oh for goodness sake, this will all blow over in five days. Is this really necessary?

Think I'll bugger off for a while.

I'm disappointed that all my comments have been deleted (due to the thread I was using being deleted)

This is something that I feel strongly about and I have been very annoyed at the media portraying this as a tragedy that we are all bought into.

Being able to get my views aired made me feel much better, now I just feel that I wasted my time this morning.

I am respectful of other people's views and haven't attacked anyone for them, even though I have been called a sick fucker amongst other things. Although in hindsight maybe I shouldn't have posted a joke.

I can't be bothered to waste my time reading the remaining post and writing my views again.

I feel like flouncing.

GuessWhatIAmANameChanger · 26/06/2009 17:09

dittany, if there are two threads the peopel who are strongly anti always end up on the thread that is "pro" in any case. Often it works the other way around too, feelings are strong and they need to be expressed!

Justine said they are keeping the thread in Music as well as the argument discussion thread, so there's scope for sad people to go and get weepy and nostalgic over their records.

hunkermunker · 26/06/2009 18:05

[waits for the first outraged, misogynistic "MOTHERS say appalling things about Michael Jackson" article to appear in the papers and puts money on it being in the Daily Mail]

Have some respect for yourselves, those who post "hope he burns" type things - what is the matter with you?

PavlovtheForgetfulCat · 26/06/2009 18:07

I agree with what people have said about one thread only, or maybe 2 threads, one for discussion which allows the open forum of free expression, and then perhaps a condolence one for those who just want to post a thought for someone who has only just died.

hunkermunker · 26/06/2009 19:09

Wouldn't they just!

GodzillasBumcheek · 26/06/2009 19:11

Are there any threads about the Michael Jackson Is not Actually Dead Just Pretending And It's All A big Lie conspiracy theory, so DH can join in (or i can on his behalf as he can't type very well)?
