I think it's blue if you have a profile & black if you don't

But if you click on the name it takes you to the profile (doesn't it? Katymac goes off to check)

If the name is black, that poster doesn't have a profile. (And should be ashamed!)

If the name is blue, the poster does have a profile - which you can see by rolling your cursor over the name and clicking the link that (oh so cleverly) pops up.

Er, sorry to put a spanner in the works, so to speak, but I have been doing a bit of a control test myself.

I arrived in the bar, to find one person with a purple name and everyone else in fetching blue.

I clicked on a poster with a profile and all her posts then turned purple.

THEN, I clicked on poster without a profile and she turned purple too.

Someone else then arrived and said that she couldn't see any purple, just black or blue!

Is it only in Mumsnet new it is like this? All names are blue in Classic, but go purple if I have ever looked at them.

I'm in classic, and when you came along Maureen you are purple (not from drink) but because I had been on your profile to see your lovely cakes last week, everyone else BLUE exp me

Hmm, names are supposed to go purple if you've clicked on them to see that person's profile.

But maybe it's a bit different in MN Classic.
