There are still a few problems with using the various "Mumsnet Classic" options. However, for a lot of people matters are significantly improved if they press Refresh in their browse. If you're using Firefox, try pressing Shift+Refresh. At about 4:30am this morning after many hours of work, that made the classic option work well. Only a couple of minor layout issues remained.

Text is not meant to be squished, you're not supposed to have to scroll down through acres of whitespace. We'll definitely fix these issues.

I've no idea why people are finding text too tiny; the font size hasn't changed intentionally, so if it is tiny for you it's either a need to press refresh (to reload the style sheet, in tech speak) or a problem that will be fixed.

Threads I'm On and Threads I'm Watching should behave in the way they always did - they do for me. Let us know the specifics of problems you have with them and we'll address them.

We know about the problem of seeing "hide hide hide" across the top of the page. If you go in to customise (which my huge ENGLISH dictionary lists as being able to be spelled either customise OR customize) you can turn off showing of the Hide option which is a workaround for this problem. We'll fix it properly soon.

The ads have neither changed size nor increased in number.

Remember: Press REFRESH (and try SHIFT+REFRESH) a couple of times. It might help a lot.

For those having problems we do apologise and will sort it all as soon as we can. For those that hate it, perhaps you'll get used to it after a while and we'll improve the classic options (though I am using them now and they're working fine).

Oh and for the 2 of you that said thanks for all the hard work: thanks! It has taken over a dozen people a lot of hard work. We had to release it in a hurry and it's not perfect, but we'll get there.

YetMoreTech · 01/02/2009 16:22

Ponders, I am not saying we can't but it was a conscious and carefully considered decision to move away from it. A lot of people don't like it and most websites don't do it these days.

OliviaMumsnet · 02/02/2009 10:01

Hello everyone

We're sure that with the snow today, there'll be loads of working from home Mumsnetting going on today but rest assured we've got Tech locked in the shed to get the glitches sorted.

OliviaMumsnet · 02/02/2009 10:02

Jabberwocky, do you mean unanswered threads?

YetMoreTech · 02/02/2009 14:06

GooseyLoosey,

You don't need to maximize your browser window, but could you just make it a little bigger in the horizontal dimension? The site is designed to be viewable without scrolling for over 99.5% of our users - you just have to make the window a bit bigger. Hope that helps.

YetMoreTech · 02/02/2009 14:18

mummylin,

Do you know what screen resolution you have set? If not, assuming your using Windows on a computer bought in the last 10 years:

  1. Right click on the desktop
  2. Choose Properties (near the bottom of the menu)
  3. Choose Settings (usually the right most tab)
  4. Look in the bottom corner - it should say Screen Resolution.

What numbers are displayed there?

Anything MORE than 800x600 will mean no scrolling.

OliviaMumsnet · 02/02/2009 14:44

Hello
We don't want to sound like a callcentre "your call is important to us" BUT
Though we're not changing the margins we are working (round the clock) to sort the text order and size and colour to bring you Mumsnet Classic at its best. But it needs refining to get it exactly the same and there are a couple of jobs ahead in the queue.
Please bear with us.

MN Towers

YetMoreTech · 02/02/2009 15:47

GooseyLoosey, I am not sure of the reason for your not being able to maximise the browser window, so I don't know if this helps, but why not just resize the window so that it fills the screen (which is subtly different from maximizing)?

YetMoreTech · 02/02/2009 16:08

Here is a page which shows a screen shot of someone using Mumsnet Talk. The screen resolution is 1024x768 (which 99.5% of MNers have or greater). The browser window is NOT maximized, but it has been resized to fill most of the desktop. Users with higher resolutions won't need to fill the desktop in this way.

No scroll bars, no scrolling to read across the line.

(Technical note: the image has been resized to fit in the space available - in reality the fonts are much bigger and thus more readable. The point here is to show the layout, not the text itself)

JustineMumsnet · 02/02/2009 20:51

Folks we're going to look at the feasibility of adding no fixed width as an option in customise for people unhappy about scrolling BUT it's complicated I gather and we need to fix all the bugs first, so please bear with us - it could be a few weeks and it may have consquences which make it impossible. We will keep you posted though.

JustineMumsnet · 02/02/2009 20:52

Notquitegrownup fixing the colours in Classic is on the to do list - it may take a few days however. Apologies for the inconvenience (I recommend MN new in the meantime) - it rather grows on you.

JustineMumsnet · 02/02/2009 21:10

Hi Chippy - thanks we know about this one and it's on the (very long) list. We'll get to it soonest.

HelenMumsnet · 03/02/2009 11:04

Polgara: you're right that the yellow folder profile icon has gone.

And that you now need to click on the person's nickname in the blue bar above their post to see their profile.

We planned it so that, if someone didn't have a profile, their nickname wouldn't be a link (so it wouldn't looked underlined when you moved your cursor over it). Which would mean you didn't waste time clicking on it.

HOWEVER, there seems to be a glitch with this and, currently, everyone's nickname shows as a link (even if they don't have a profile).

We're sorry about this - and it's on Tech's scribbled list itemised spreadsheet of things to fix.

HelenMumsnet · 03/02/2009 12:35

Furball: that's a good request about advanced search and we will sort that out for you.

It may take us a little while, though: we've a few bigger problems minor glitches to sort out first.

JustineMumsnet · 03/02/2009 21:00

Threads I'm on glitches we know about
Lack of purple threads when you've click on one, we know about

Will fix both soonest

missymum last day was bust - it never showed all - try using advanced search yesterday, does that not work for you?

JustineMumsnet · 03/02/2009 21:32

Mutt - they'll be regular size in Classic - as they were before.

Coming soon!

HelenMumsnet · 04/02/2009 10:01

Simply: we're aware of that glitch with the Small Ads/Media Requests - and that's definitely on our list of things to try to sort out today.

You should be able to get 100 convos back on your Active Convos display: click on Customise, then scroll down to the heading 'Active Conversations and Searches' (third section). There's an option there to set Active Convos to 10, 25, 50 or 100.

The Home Page does have Product Reviews at the top for now (mainly because we know that's what lots of people search for, and it hasn't been very obvious when to find them in the past) but that doesn't mean they'll always be at the top. We may just shock you one day with a sneaky change!

The problem you're having with Discussions of the Day does sound odd, though - do you mean you're taken further down the page when you click on the individual thread links?

HelenMumsnet · 04/02/2009 11:58

LackaDAISYcal! Yes, it has been mentioned already - and we are working on it as fast as we can

HelenMumsnet · 04/02/2009 13:02

ooh, so it has, ShrinkingViolet. Will alert the Shed...

HelenMumsnet · 04/02/2009 13:24

Only if you say please, RTKangaMummy

At the moment, if you are using Mumsnet Classic, the threads in Active Convos doen't (generally) change colour when you've clicked on them. We're currently working on this - and hope to have it fixed soon.

If it's really driving you mad, try Customising to Musmnet New for a bit: the threads in Active Convos there go a lovely purpley colour once you've clicked on them.

HelenMumsnet · 04/02/2009 14:03

RTKM: glad you're happy (it's nice isn't it?).
If you go back to Customise and scroll down to Active Conversations and Searches, you can get back to 100 threads in Active Convos and you can reset the Threads I'm On options too.

SoupDragon/LacksaDAISYcal: facilities in the Shed are second to none, we feel

HelenMumsnet · 04/02/2009 14:16

Are you clicking the Save Changes box inside that Active Conversations and Searches section?

HelenMumsnet · 04/02/2009 14:19

oh dear - will find out if there's some way to fix that for you...

HelenMumsnet · 04/02/2009 21:25

Hello all.

Thought we'd update you on the glitch-sorting so you can see how painfully marvellously the Shed crowd are fixing things for you.

So, in no particular order, as they say on Strictly Come Teching...

Classic: making it look like Classic used to be - We're on the case but it'll be a while yet, folks

Classic options in Customise, making them stick - This one will be a while yet

Advanced search has no search button on it - Yes it does now!

Threads I'm watching needs correct last poster name and summary lists and correct dates/times - Should be fixed now (but looking at the last few posts on this thread, we may need to check that)

Special needs is still appearing in active conversations - Not any more!

Dodgy dates/times in Threads I'm On/ Unanswered messages - Should be fixed now

CustomiSe, not Customize - Well, that was fixed but it seems to have unfixed itself all over again. Sorry.

Search button at top of pages - This one will be a while yet

Nickname on posts is only supposed to show as a link if that poster has a profile - This one will be a while yet

Media Requests/Class Ads - first post not visible - Yes, it is now

Moon not updating - This one will be a while yet

HelenMumsnet · 04/02/2009 21:41

Yes, 10 weeks: looks like we'll have to do some more work on that one. Sorry.

Trinity: if you're using Mumsnet Classic, I'm afraid you won't get purple on threads you've read till we manage to finish all our tinkering with Classic BUT if you fancy giving Mumsnet New a little go in the meantime, you'll find you get lots of lovely purpley threads

HelenMumsnet · 05/02/2009 11:52

Browny: are you using Classic? Because, if you are, it'll be a while before we can fix the going bold thing in Classic.

Why not try Mumsnet New in the meantime? The thread titles go all lovely and bold and purpley there

Simply: lol at your lightbulb moment
