Testing Testing - Ok so now here's our new look (but you don't have to have it, do you hear?)

This is a sneak preview of our redesign - it's planned across the whole site but we thought we'd give you a preview of Talk so you could give us your thoughts. ETA is early in the new year (God willing).

Two things we should make clear:

First Customise talk and Mn Classic WILL STILL BE AVAILABLE so don't panic if you really hate it!

Second it's not finished yet so not everything works perfectly - it's a test site.

You might wonder why we are bothering with a redesign by the way. We have had quite a lot of feedback that newcomers find the site a little hard to find their way round at first so we are trying to simplify it. We haven't changed much overall in nine years but we've added quite a few bits and bobs on, and to newbies it can be quite daunting we think.

And one more thing - we've found in the past (and we know ourselves) that change can be disorienting but do give it a go for a wee while before you trash it completely, please? .

There's no link to it yet - YetMoreTech will post it in a minute - he wants to add more caveats before he posts it up!

Hope you like it (or at least don't loathe it) - let us know your thoughts.

it looks like a MN version of netmums at the bottom and that has always irritated me. I like a whole menu not a summary/favourites built by other people.

OK much more professional and less cartoon imagery but still....

Ronaldinhio · 19/12/2008 23:00

I like what we have

goldFAQinsenceandmyrrh · 19/12/2008 23:01

me neither - it looks like Latin to me - Feck knows how I managed to pass my Standard Grade Latin - as can't translate a word of if

twitteringbirds · 19/12/2008 23:01

For FAQ

AdventCandlewax · 19/12/2008 23:02

It is definitely more easier on the eye; by that I mean that the colours and the screen are not so glaring, so I like it!

goldFAQinsenceandmyrrh · 19/12/2008 23:04

thanks twittering - LMAO at

"making it look like readable English." - ermm no it doesn't it looks like a dead language

Jux · 19/12/2008 23:06

I think I like it. I look forward to it being live.

sparklyxmasfairy · 19/12/2008 23:17

it will take some getting used to
but I am a cantankerous old fart so you know

S1ur · 19/12/2008 23:19

heh yeah I lurve dat latn thang.

It is true though, I once inserted some random approximation of relevant text in something and it was ALL ABOUT oh well we wouldn't say that exactly, more blah blah.

point is it a filler.

one that doesn't bother as much as if they had written.

"Our audience care about their child getting the best start and so we advocate only the best Greggs sausage rolls, not your cheaper versions" (actually not sure they are cheaper versions)

Point - you can only get mildly irritated by latin

NappiesGaloriaInExcelsis · 19/12/2008 23:24

i think it looks good.
and i am not a lover of change.
in fact, im a grumpy bitch who hates change. but yeah, looks alright.

i am slightly concerned that you have to click 'more' to see all the topics under any given umbrella... i think ones that arent visible will be overlooked largely.

lou031205 · 19/12/2008 23:25

I have always thought that it would be good to see who started a thread as well as the name of the last poster.

Could that be incorporated? Particularly useful if someone is on another thread and says "x, could you take a look at my thread in chat, please",

DisasterArea · 19/12/2008 23:29

nooo. i don't like it. not one bit. don't like drop down boxy its. don't like the listy bits. don't like it at all. so there.

YetMoreTech · 19/12/2008 23:32

lou031205, it's not a bad idea but it's a question of fitting everything in - some people are already saying things are too long or too fussy. We'll give it some thought though.

Nighbynight · 19/12/2008 23:35

take out hte number of posts and the date of the last post, and you could fit the OP name in?

YetMoreTech · 19/12/2008 23:39

Nighbynight, yep, we could, but then people would moan about not having that information we lose. It's a tough call sometimes. We have spent a LOT of time trying to please as many people as we can I promise! Anyway, we'll see what everyone thinks. Keep 'em coming.

FairyLightsForever · 19/12/2008 23:46

i like it, it's nice and clear. It's slightly strange coming back to this one!

EachPeachPearMum · 19/12/2008 23:47

Noooooooo... it's just too netmums eek!

StretchmarkSantaClaws · 19/12/2008 23:55

I don't like it, so there!!

SuperBunny · 20/12/2008 00:02

Ooo, I quite like it! I was all set to mutter about not liking change but it's good. Well done all!

It doesn't look much different to me. I was hoping MN was going to finally join the 21st century and be like Vbullitin or Phpbb.
Oh well, as it's not too different, it's not a huge problem.

In each, rm is it forum, you shouldn't have the sub forums in alphabetical order IMO, should be according to popularity, would like the conception forum to be immediately visible for example. But otherwise the look of it is ok.
