Uploading photos to MN (not Member Profile nor For Sale)

Several times in the last few days I've wanted to post (not link) to a couple of photos, from my digital camera.

So far, I've put them in the For Sale area - if you search for 'Please Ignore' you should see two photos I posted showing a user some ktichen stuff and three photos showing another user some garden stuff.

I don't want to set a precedent or annoy people if this is felt to be a bit of a p*ss-take, but might it be possible to establish a Topic called 'Photos' and allow people to upload one (or more) in a given thread ?

Abuse would be reported in the normal way and images could be deleted.

If the bandwidth implications are significant, maybe they could be size-capped, like the present For Sale / Member Profile area, or they could decay over time, being removed after 30 days etc.

I appreciate that this would normally be handled by online Web space, but would personally prefer this to be held within MN.

Comments ?

I was thinking this yesterday too.

I have always used a link to photobox then deleted them afterwards iykwim

nailpolish · 22/03/2005 08:18

i dont like the idea of it possibly being abused by some wierdo

hub2dee · 22/03/2005 08:37

I understand your concern, nailpolish, but think the risk of abuse with photos is pretty similar to that of people posting text.

Not the same, granted, but not dissimilar.

Someone could register and start a 'nasty' thread on anything they wanted. Anyone could paste any kind of 'nasty' text on any thread too.

The way I see it, if mods see porn etc. they should be empowered to delete immediately. I don't necessarily see this being more troll-attracting than the ability to post text. (Infact many trolls enjoy the banter and wind up, and just posting one abnoxious image would give them too little trollish delight).

When you were doing your front garden, I could have showed you a planting scheme for a bed etc. etc. (personal to me, not a link online), that may have been helpful. Stuff like this...

you a gardener then hub2dee
I need help!
I'd like to post the odd photo as well and then delete it maybe 10 days later or let is naturally subside

hub2dee · 22/03/2005 09:02

typo for the pedants (like me): obnoxious.

piffle: Just a hobby, not a professional. I love plants / flowers / fine hard-landscaping materials and outstanding design though. Self-confessed plant snob too.

Can you clarify the nature of the assistance you seek ? Maybe post in the Gardening Club ?

agree hub2dee, i suppose

SoupDragon · 22/03/2005 09:17

Maybe a shorter life span than the For Sale boards?

hub2dee · 22/03/2005 09:50

Hope I didn't sound bullying, nailpolish.... that's all too easy with written text on here... wasn't sounding that way in my head, IYSWIM - anyone check out the food thread / JO discussion / packed lunch chat this AM ? All the nail files were coming out...

The photos could have a very short half life, as Soupy points out, especially if they particularly impact server load, but at the same time one could argue they are intrinsic parts of a thread, and even the most trivial threads on MN get proper archiving.... and some of the threads do get exceedingly long, which also has bandwidth implications....

My integrated fridge freezer will last forever !!!!!
