about baby P in the news. The amount of them is getting bizarre and mawkish. surely one thread to discuss/debate and one for the weeping wailing and woe it's me, would do.
PLEASE
(and before someone berates me for starting another one, I have posted it rather than emailing MN hq in the hope that If people agree. MN will take more notice)

Eh wasn't me I don't do detail I know it already and if anyone who doesn't want to read it well that's fine I'm not going to make them.

2shoes do you mean the petition thread?

Flightattendant4 · 17/11/2008 09:47

I don't think anyone is revelling in it.
I think people want to discuss details because it just goes round in their heads otherwise being horrible and awful.

I don't find it helps personally but am not going to have a go at those who feel the need. All we are doing, any of us, is helpless talking. It won't bring him back. It's just everyone trying to work through the awfulness somehow.

Just avoid the threads if they upset you.
I am avoiding reading them but I won't hide the titles.

Flightattendant4 · 17/11/2008 09:48

I have a Peter myself

It's a bit hard to avoid thinking about the lad who died.

conniedescending · 17/11/2008 09:59

I disagree, I think people should be able to post threads about what they want even if there is already threads about that topic.

MN should perhaps make it it obvious how to hide htreads without clicking on them - hardly a big deal to click a button then for those that are troubled by reminders in active convos - a concept I find hard to understand.

But, what does confuse me is that those who are troubled by the threads and the nature of what is being postd have to actually go on the threads and post? This type of thread, although far more diplomatic than the hideous 'competitive sadding' fans the flames as much as the ones that are being so strongly contested.

Agree with OP. One thread only please.

mmj is right - it is emotional porn.

ABloke · 17/11/2008 10:30

Agree with OP completely

BUT Please, please, please can we stop using the porn word too. My work-place ICT does not like it.

Thankfully I am not there today or I would not be here. [confusing?]

Emotional porn
Property porn
Book porn
Please, please stop using the P word.

conniedescending · 17/11/2008 10:32

fair point LL - this thread is not as inflammatory but the whole - 'can we not talk about this aspect or that aspect' on all the other threads just adds another argument on top of the debate actually being had iykwim

its a bit of a parody really that people who are upset at reading thread titles and about peoples 'grief' or the links that have been posted are also criticising people for being upset about this case

I genuinely think that MN should not intervene. The threads will lessen as the newstory lessens.....it seems more natural.

I dont want to read the links so I don't and some peoples opinions on the matter do anger and upset me because I disagree so much with what they are saying......but I don't want to silence that. I can either debate what is being said or just think how ignorant that poster is or just not read it in the first place. I don't think arguing about that posters rights or wrongs in posting such things and trying to limit where they can express those thoughts is an option.

mamadiva · 17/11/2008 10:35

Personally I think its out of order that its being used at al in connection with the subject of these threads.

DisasterArea · 17/11/2008 10:36

please can we have a way of hiding threads without having to open them. please

JustineMumsnet · 17/11/2008 10:41

Hi all,
Seems that a lot of folks feel strongly about this so, yes, there's no reason why we can't do as we did with Madeleine McCann and restrict posts to one thread by putting a message to that effect at the top of talk and directly new posters to that thread. That way you can easily hide that thread and not have to stumble across it.

That's what we'll do shortly unless a large amount of people appear suddenly to say they disagree.

Re the ability to hide a thread without opening - we'll talk to tech's about that - we should be able to sort but it will be a longer term solution I suspect.

Oh yes! Thank God you're here!

Threadworrm · 17/11/2008 10:46

Re 'hide without opening' we had that for a while, but it meant that every single thread in active convos had a 'hide this thread' option right next to it, which was noisy and incredibly unfriendly to those who had initiated a conversation.

Surely it can't be that distressing to open a thread and click 'hide'.

doggiesayswoof · 17/11/2008 10:46

ll thanks - I'd forgotten you could do that. That's brightened up my day no end

ABloke · 17/11/2008 10:49

Justine can you tell them all to stop using word "porn" please.

Pretty pretty please.

With knobs on..............

I was asking if the nasty PM I had was unreasonable or I was to not want to read about it and it's not just about Baby P, it's about Jamie Bulger, DBJ and everything else that's showing up at the moment.
