I don't use it much, I like Firefox best, but I sometimes have problems with our school's learning platform in it, so I use IE if I'm going to be working on it while Mumsnetting

babygrosandgros · 21/11/2008 23:51

IE keeps freezing and I have to open up a new page, drives me crazy.

Do you have to pay for firefox and why is it better?

babygrosandgros · 21/11/2008 23:53

Any other cool tricks you can let us in on

The links thing is great, just tried it and its going to save me a lot of time

NCbirdy · 21/11/2008 23:56

Who me? I just expanded on someones knowledge of a different platform! I know things like [home] and [end] keys but I guess you got that already ....

I can do you a bit of C++ programming though if that is any use

babygrosandgros · 22/11/2008 00:03

Just downloaded and installed firefox - see if I can be converted

Have no idea what C++ programming means - I am a self taught computer novice!

bettythebuilder · 22/11/2008 00:05

thanks jux, I'll need all the luck I can get

Ok, I've clicked a tick for links, tried dragging the icon across, and I think something's happened but I'm not sure what

I may be a lost cause, even though since starting a business 3 years ago I have learned absolutely loads (honest- although I was starting from a very low base, when I did a computer course for graduates, we had floppy disks, had not heard of the internet, and the printer was in a separate room to the computers!)

NCbirdy · 22/11/2008 00:13

I rest my case BG&G, I spent three years learning nothing useful at all Let me know how firefox goes though!

Betty, if you drag the link to active convos from the top of the MN page it works more easily. To check click the links button and a list pops up of all the links you have made.

RustyBear · 22/11/2008 00:14

You might have too many things on the links bar for them all to show up - IE usually puts all kinds of Microsoft links on there by default. You might need to click on the double headed arrow to see everything on the Links menu - then you can either delete Links you don't need or drag the toolbars around to give the Links one more space.

babygrosandgros - do you know the one about pressing F11 to get rid of the toolbars so you have more space to see a webpage (press it again to get them back)

bettythebuilder · 22/11/2008 00:18

It's worked! the 'links' bit had >> after it, and when I clicked on that, there was this thread!
Thanks everyone- I've done something technical (albeit with lots of help )Whoot!

NCbirdy · 22/11/2008 00:23

yeah! Go Betty > button then just the ones I added...

babygrosandgros · 22/11/2008 00:24

LIKING F11, thanks Rusty

RustyBear · 22/11/2008 00:28

Actually I can't remember if IE7 ever did have links there to start with - it might have just been IE6
I don't think you'll get anything added automatically now though.

NCbirdy · 22/11/2008 00:35

That is good because I get really annoyed when things appear without any permission from me - even with firewalls etc all up and running (and microsoft seem to be particularly good at it!)

I get all tense and start spitting dummies and chucking teddies - it is not pretty

Jux · 22/11/2008 14:53

Go betty go!

What a lot happened last night - and now I know about F11 too- that's really great and I'll be using it a lot.

How are you getting on with Firefox bg&g?

I was a programmer once too; before pc's were invented and the computer was kept in a large room with anti-static mats everywhere; the 'floppies' were about 2ft in diameter and 9in deep and had to be carried in both hands, you had to climb up steps to put them in the drive!

babygrosandgros · 22/11/2008 15:52

Jux - you were there at the beginning!

Using firefox but cant really see much difference

Jux · 22/11/2008 19:15

There probably isn't now; I switched to it a few years ago when I got some problem or other with IE6. I think part of the reason I like it is that it isn't Microsoft! Though, tbh, I rather like Microsoft too. I have no logic or sense to back up my preference (I was a very good programmer though!).

bettythebuilder · 23/11/2008 13:05

I've just popped on to say how fab that 'drag something over to links' thing is

I'm often browsing the net, business forums etc and if I see a post or something relevant to my business (often website or seo stuff) I leave it open on a tab for dh (who designed my wesite) to look at (then lose it all when I close down to go out!).

Not anymore! I'm a-clickin' and a-draggin' like nobody's business

NCbirdy · 24/11/2008 07:46

me too, thanks Rustybear and Jux!!!
