So what is the point of this new box that lets you make it bigger and smaller when typing a new post or message?

TDWP, I bet you have just upgraded/changed your browser. The changes you're talking about are not changes at the MN end. Some browsers do allow you to resize a text entry box, so that if you write a lot you can do so in a less cramped stylee, innit.
