Just looked at my last post, I did speculate then decided not to post, removed name and then hit the send button, I wasn't trivialising it honest.

Having said that, in the troll stakes we have endured worse, at least BFT is very obviously pissed and being a bit inflammatory.

Personally I find the Victoria Peckhams of this world more offensive, they just sit in judgment on the rest of us

suzywong · 24/02/2005 22:40

not meaning to diminish the gravity of this offence but was it more that the post about Nikcola's Dh from the unpleasant poster?

joash · 24/02/2005 22:42

This might sound like a stupid wuestion - but what are 'trolls' in relation to MN?

Right.... having one last try...........I have just reduced a photo from 2.26mb to 0.97mb, it was about as big as a postage stamp....how do I change it to 18k.

what the difference between a MB and a K? I have jpeg wotsits and all that.

LGJ · 24/02/2005 22:48

Here Joash

An internet troll is a person who sends duplicitous messages hoping to get angry responses, or a message sent by such a person.

Trolling is often described as an online version of the breaching experiment, where social boundaries and rules of etiquette are broken. Self-proclaimed trolls often style themselves as Devil's Advocates or gadflies or culture jammers, challenging the dominant discourse and assumptions of the forum they are trolling in an attempt to subvert and introduce different ways of thinking.

Detractors who value etiquette claim that true Devil's Advocates generally identify themselves as such for the sake of etiquette, whereas trolls often consider etiquette to be something worth trolling in order to fight groupthink.

Trolls are sometimes caricatured as socially inept.

Gwenick · 24/02/2005 22:50

a troll can also be someone who 'pretends' to be something they're not - often having more than one 'id' online and chaing easily from one 'person' to another - often no making 'provoking' messages but often just leading people astray or getting unwarranted sympathy.

Snugs · 24/02/2005 22:51

emma - easier for me to do than describe cos it depends how you are reducing it.

email pic to me if you want antlxstew at yahoo.co.uk

will do it for you and send straight back - done a few today for other people

joash · 24/02/2005 22:52

Okay - thanks for that.

leglebegle · 24/02/2005 22:52

trolls are shit stirrers who laugh to themselves when seeing people get all riled up at their comments. sad, weird people with nothing better to do. Think Judge Flounce/wigandrobe ....

joash · 24/02/2005 22:55

I seem to miss all the controversial stuff...

RTKangaMummy · 24/02/2005 22:57

But why be so horrible and unkind though?

joash · 24/02/2005 22:58

Probably cause they're sad individuals who get off on causing misery and upset. Perhaps we should just ignore them.
Is there anyway to find out who it is?

soapbox · 24/02/2005 22:59

People who are so miserable with themselves that they like bursting other people's bubbles - nothing like spreading your misery around to make yourself feel better

TBH - I feel rather sorry for them.

I feel sorrier though for their victims

Snugs · 24/02/2005 23:01

emma - check your inbox

LGJ · 24/02/2005 23:01

As I said though this is just some one pissed and being a bit of a stirrer.

Personally I find the Victoria Peckhams of this world more offensive, they just sit in judgment on the rest of us.
