I don’t like this new feature - but I might if you changed it

I don’t like this new “show more” feature. It cuts off too soon. I would really love this feature if it cut off at about 20 lines or so, to just truncate the truly endless posts some occasional posters write, especially on political threads, but this is not long enough so now I’m going to have to tap a lot of “see more” instead of just reading a thread. Hard disagree, if it's at 20 lines. It's just an interruption to have to click "Show more" in order to understand someone's argument. Maybe acceptable for extremely long posts, but I rarely find the required scrolling a problem. If we could choose our preferred behaviour in Settings that would be acceptable to everyone ...

It's irritating me too.

Some post that people post are just way to long to say the simple things.
I mean just get to the point we dont need your life story.

For me I’d like this feature if it immediately truncated anything that started with “I asked ChatGPT for you and it said this…” which tends to be the only crazy long posts I see. I’d also be happy if it was totally removed but I can’t stand it in its current form.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the change. We've rolled it back while we reconsider the cut-off point, as we agree we made it too short.

The aim was to make threads, particularly on mobile, easier to scan. We'd had feedback that very long posts can mean a lot of scrolling, which disrupts the flow of a thread. We're taking on board all of your feedback, including the suggestions around opt out settings, but we're hoping that once we've adjusted the cut-off point, it will feel much less disruptive.

Thank you again for all your feedback on the truncation feature released last week.

We've just released it again with a change based directly on the feedback we received last week. The original cut-off point was too short, so we’ve increased it. This means posts will need to be considerably longer before they’re collapsed.

Long quoted sections will continue to be collapsed, as we hope this will make lengthy posts in quotes easier to scan and read. They can still be expanded and collapsed using ‘See more’ and ‘See less’.

We hope this change is less intrusive while keeping the benefit for particularly long posts and quotes. Please let us know how you find it.

I don't want this, there's absolutely no need for it.
It's irritating, I shouldn't need to click a link for a posters actual comment to be displayed.

Remove it and make it optional, at least for premium users.

We're paying to provide content for you.

I still don't like it at all. As I have said before, an opt-out from this feature in Settings would be very welcome.

Yet more encouragement for people to skim over the thread content and just blurt their thoughts regardless of what everyone else has said. And even with the longer cut off it's still too short for any substantive discussion. I was driven to find this thread after reading three successive threads where I was having to click on every single post.

It's great on the OP, which you don't need to read in full at the top of every page.

It's very useful on a quote, because you've already read it once and usually the first couple of lines are sufficient reminder.

It's utterly infuriating on original content.

I've seen several people say it's aggravating their RSI, and if it's adding 20 more clicks per page a lot of people will have to give up reading. It certainly doesn't help me as a mobile user, because the link is often not in an easy-to-reach spot without using both hands whereas I can scroll with just one.

We're working on adding a setting that will allow you to turn off truncated posts. This isn't an instant change, but it's something we're aiming to add as soon as possible. We'll update this thread as soon as we have any news.

We've been reading through all of your comments, and we've decided to switch truncated posts off again while we review everything properly.

As with any new feature, it's clear that people use the site in different ways, and what's helpful for some isn't for others. That's why we're looking into adding a setting that will let you turn truncated posts off if you prefer to see everything expanded by default, rather than taking a one size fits all approach.

Thank you again for all the feedback you shared about truncated posts. We switched the feature off while we reviewed what you told us and made some changes.

We heard loud and clear that collapsing ordinary posts was too disruptive. It interrupted the flow of threads, meant repeatedly clicking or tapping to read posts, and made the site harder to use for some people. At the same time, many of you told us that collapsing lengthy posts within quotes can be helpful.

With that in mind, we've changed the feature so that only long posts within quotes are truncated. This change is now live on the site.
