Revolting cigarette advert is back and is fixed to the top of every page

The revolting cigarette advert that I and others complained about months ago has reappeared, but this time it is fixed to the top of the screen and it’s not possible to scroll past it.

It is in my eyeline constantly and it is on every single page. Although there is an icon on it that I hoped would allow me to block it, it doesn’t work.

How can I stop it? I’ve weathered some unpleasant stuff on here, most recently a repetitive advert for Korean brides which was deeply inappropriate, but I have a deep seated phobia which means I can’t look at cigarette ends.

I don’t object to adverts, but surely we must be given a choice to see things that aren’t distressing to us?

Morning @DaffodilValley. We'd like to have a look at this. We appreciate you don't want to see much more of the cigarette ends but if you're able to click on it and post the url here or take a screenshot and post that that will help us track the ad down and work out what's going on.

NoCommentingFromNowOn · 17/06/2026 09:28

@KellyMumsnet what do you do with the screenshot as it doesn’t actually lead to the advert?

KellyMumsnet · 17/06/2026 09:59

@NoCommentingFromNowOn we put these into an image search to help us find the ad as a description alone often isn't enough. A url link is generally the quickest way to help us track down an ad, though.

This is from just now, on the AIBU topic.

Hi again @DaffodilValley. Thanks for posting that screengrab. This does look like the same ad we've chatted about before.

We understand that certain ads can be unpleasant or triggering for some users.
Unfortunately, we can't customise or block ads for single users. Ads are a key way we fund the site, and while we work to avoid anything that breaches our guidelines or is widely reported, we cannot make changes based on individual feelings alone, we're afraid.

Some ads don't have the 'x' button to close them either, so with this one it is just a case of scrolling away from it, unfortunately. We're sorry we can't be any more help with this one. The ad is to encourage people to pick up and dispose of their cigarette butts properly so hopefully, while you're not enjoying the ad itself, there is at least a net good to come from it.

We will continue to monitor reports about this ad in case there are a significant number of complaints. In the meantime, there is the option to sign up to Premium membership, which will remove ads like this one, if you wanted to. It's £2.99 a month and there's more information on it here if you were interested: https://www.mumsnet.com/ad-free
