No cross for distracting ad at top of page

It's frustrating enough having moving, highly distracting adverts appear at the top of the thread, and having to take the time to press the cross.

However, now they are appearing without a cross. I actually cannot read the thread with a flashing image at the top of the page. Maybe this is the kick I need to spend less time on Mumsnet.

No cross for distracting ad at top of page

None of the ads at the top have a cross on for me its so bloody annoying and distracting . I am mourning the loss of the old logo.

I gave in and got Premium.

This irritates me too (and on lots of other websites as well), really fast-moving distracting adverts; I'm sure they weren't so intrusive a few years ago, but somehow, we've been nudged into accepting them. There was an "angry birds" one which drove me so mad a while ago, in which a bird was catapulted at the screen, and got its beak stuck in it.

With the ones which appear on the right hand side, if I'm on my PC, I've found it can help to have the window at the "restore" size, rather than maximised, then it's possible to resize the window, so the ad is out of sight. (We didn't have this problem in the years of slow dial-up!)

And I'm not going to succumb to paying for not having advertising - I'd sooner get off MN. I'm sure that if you accept paying for one website, other websites somehow find out about it, and try even harder to persuade you to do likewise.

actually I did this morning as well after reading your post...what a bloody difference!! I use Mumsnet a lot as I don't have friends in real life so I reckon it is worth the £2 odd a month

I got DuckDuckGo for free, as recommended by another poster on this board. I use this browser app just for MN.

No intrusive ads, no freezing, no overheating of my phone, no rapid drainage of the battery. Much nicer.

Thanks for the screenshot @Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr . If anyone else comes across ads that can't be closed could you also send us a screenshot? Or click on the ad and send us the url if possible?

HebeMumsnet · 06/10/2025 22:36

We should also add that not all ads are required to have an ‘X’ to close them. Some types are designed to stay on the screen for a short time, which is allowed under standard advertising rules. But if you have any concerns, just send us a link or screengrab and we'll be happy to take a look.

AutumnyCrow · 07/10/2025 14:52

We get it, they’re unbearable for many of your users but they’re staying.

Levriers · 08/10/2025 13:01

Quite possibly one of the most irritating things that you’ve introduced. I find if the ad comes up at the bottom of the screen ( randomly) there is an x to click but not if it is at the top. It makes no difference though. Still comes back 🙄
